It is confirmed by jeb_, the betterlight mod will be in the next Minecraft update coming sometime this week!

I've been using that for over a month now and it is beautiful. I'm so happy jeb_ is helping, he seems to know his stuff better than Notch tbh.

Also; (mainly quoting mojang here)
- wooden half blocks
- cobblestone half blocks
- new launcher
- New block! This is a sweet one for you red stone junkies. A block that acts as a signal carrier, much like red stone. But on top of that, it also acts as a repeater AND a programmable delayer
- various bug fixes
- New save file format. With the new format, loading is now seven times faster. On top of that, the number of files for each saved world is drastically decreased. This new format will not destroy your current saves, as they will be converted the first time they are loaded.
- Beds!!!
- The Bukkit team helped jeb_ fix the glitchy fences in SMP!
- Secret update! Oh, yes. There will be that as well.

Don't worry, Bukkit will solve that I believe. There was NPC features in hmod.
jeb_ is also kinda cooperating with the bukkit team so maybe he will help solve the NPC skin problems. (Currently all player characters have skin that is their name, so if you make a NPC with the name yottabyte, he will have my skin. If you make a NPC named Bob Bobberson he will have the default skin since there is no player named that.)

Ok, then the minecraft update I really, really, really want to see is NPCs with villages and that are able to communicate with you and actually build things. Not sure how hard that would be. Oh, and to have them within the normal generated world in a normal minecraft game, no modding included.

They would have to code some AI, which is quite difficult if you want the NPCs to place blocks, walk around, collect resources and do all kinds of other things on their own. Not to mention the load it would put on a server if there's a lot of NPC's.

Well they dont have to place blocks maybe, perhaps you program them to mine cobble and place it in a chest? and it only works with the fat of its hand untill you give it a pick axe to work with. Responding to monsters, hideing when it gets dark. It would still be pretty complicated.
