The Nametag Debate - Cerce - 05-03-2012

Alright - as it has been mentioned by FunnyCop and many others, people are using nametags as in-character means of locating another character. Some are claiming that it is metagaming. Others claim that it is not. Still others just don't care one way or the other. So; here's a few in-depth reasons as to why it could go one way or the other.

Do note that neither position is incorrect.

For Nametags:
Against Nametags:

Shouldn't be used to identify or distinguish, but locating is perfectly reasonable considering there is the ability to sneak to counteract it.

I believe that name tags shouldn't be used to locate but can be used to distinguish a player from far away (if not behind a wall of some sort) if they are not wearing a mask.

What if they symbolize sensing another player, like sound or somethin'.

RE: The Nametag Debate - Cerce - 05-03-2012

That could work.

RE: The Nametag Debate - geckosquid - 05-03-2012

I've always pictured name tags as footsteps, personally. Still, if we were able to mod the server so that name tags weren't visible behind walls, I would be very happy.
I think they should be used in roleplay because it's impossible not to use them. If you see someone's name in a mine, most people will find an RP excuse to go into the mine no matter what.

No. If people break rules we're going to just remove the rule and allow it to be done? Smooth.

You can hear people walking so it shouldn't resemble sound. I don't want people to simply look trough 10 Walls and locate me. That's not realistic at all.

RE: The Nametag Debate - Third Eye - 05-03-2012

That is also another function of sneaking. If you sneak you are less likely to be able to have your footsteps cause you to be found in an enemies town/home. If somebody sees your name tag they will automatically go to your position. Plus if your wearing a mask while on a raid and somebody looks at your name tag, they will find a way to use that to their advantage. Such as "we followed him to where he lives" or "he dropped a piece of paper showing the direction in which he lives".

I'm saying that there's no point in having a rule if:

1. It's impossible to enforce.
2. People will easily find a way around it no matter what.
3. It will cause tons of flame wars; "ZOMG YOU USED MAI NAEMTAG 2 FIND MEEEE" "NOOOO MAI KARAKTER WUD HAV GONE THER ANYWAYS" "NOOOO UR A POOPHEAD" "NOOOO U" "ABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE"
