Warcraft 3 sounds good enough, I don't have it installed yet though and not on steam. But I have it somewhere, other chances are a hamachi network and people talking through mumble.
And mount and blade: warband might be interesting as well, have never played it on multiplayer. And I can buy it if needed.

Warcraft 3 ftw.. You dont need Hamachi, you just need to portforward. (there are some really good RP games there as well)
