I've been watching jefmajor's "playthrough" of the DayZ mod, and I've learned these things.
1: Be hyper-paranoid. If you are approaching a town or building, think tactical. Don't derp into an open field and run around pegging all the zombies anywhere within a mile of you. Try hiding behind tree lines, in buildings, on hillsides, and DON'T GO NEAR ROADS.
2: Don't ignore your hunger/thirst, because it can get bad if you start getting mobbed by zombies and get so hungry as to lose blood from it.
3: GET. AWAY. FROM. THE. COAST.
4: Don't go to places like churches when starting out, because lots of people camp churches on the coast, as they're full of good loot normally.
5: Avoid other people. This one's important, as making contact with other people generally means they will shoot you before you even have the chance to type out "Friend?" or use the direct coms setting on the radio.
6: Try not to get into fights, because if you see someone else anywhere near the coastline, they're either hunting people for food/guns/ammo/sport, or they're total noobs and will be swarmed in seconds. Not worth killing yourself over a noob with a makarov.
7: Don't go crazy over blood amounts, having more than 4k units of blood is normally enough to be alright for a time being.
8: Try to have fun and not obsess over the game.

EDIT: And don't go to the northwest airfield unless you feel foolhardy or have some really nice stuff and multiple people with you.

Protip: If you find rocket launchers lying around, don't pick them up. They aren't supposed to be in DayZ. People who hack them in scatter them around some servers, so others will pick them up and be banned for having them.

And to add to what crash said, there's a notorious hacker on DayZ who goes on random servers and does crazy stuff for laughs. Jef has an incident recorded in which a certain hacker spawned in old lady NPCs that followed people around and had compasses, maps, and radios on them. The people on the server who didn't read the chat and were new to DayZ, who had no idea that admins on servers can't spawn things in, passed it off as a gift from the admins. I've heard of incidents that were more game-breaking than stuff like that, as that is relatively harmless. There have been things much worse like mass zombie spawning and people being teleported to one area.

Yeah, with all the publicity the mod has been getting lately the amount of bad people has also increased. Hacks and scripts get more common and worse as well. :/

Does that mean you'll stop playing? Laugh

so far I've died twice once by a horde of zed and once by a noob hunter who killed me almost literally after i spawned in. The game i'm working on now has me in the remote woods, so far i've found a shotgun and i'm hiding in the woods. they seem really safe

I have found an M1911 with 2 clips. Picked it up, Saved this guy who was swarmed. He shoots me in the face.

Showing once again that you shouldn't trust people.
