This is the answer to all your questions. It's just a fun gift that you get for donating this month. Yes, people can steal it and you can lose it. But if the only reason you donate is to get a turkey, you might want to reconsider your reasons.
Also, if you donate 5 dollars (Not for the turkey) or more, Yottabyte will draw you something on MsPaint (Ask him). He has yet to add to this to the donor status, but I can confirm he does this :3.

I will very much give a customized, and respectful (towards that specific donor) drawing, MS paint style. No charge extra, just ask yotta to confirm with me that you donated and it'll be done.

grr i tried to become a donor but my prepaid debit card (Visa) would not be accepted... i may be doing it wrong but i dont think that is the case
