Maps aren't random since computers can't create random numbers. Seeds used to be the current time in milliseconds since 1970 but Notch added a feature so you can specify the seed yourself. But if it's the actual world generation thing, wtf are you going on about? I just left the thing blank and it pooped out a floating island.
