The only problem I see with it is that sending an in-game PM can be very useful for a variety of means, including moderating and for other important information. I don't believe they should ever be taken out. However, using "Crashbats" as something similar to what postboxes were might be a cool idea. Like, when the bat gets to you, the letter appears in your inventory or something.

Brilliant! The bats should also require a certain amount of food to begin their travels.

Well, the bats could carry chests either to players or drop them at specific coordinates. That would introduce a cool new dynamic.
