It's... complicated. Here's a link to the main wiki, and a download for the game if you're interested. I sort of suck at the game, but remember, as the wiki and help guide says, "losing is fun."

Ah yes, I attempted at playing dwarf fortress a couple of weeks back. Didn't really get too far though.
If you want to try the game I recommend watching a couple of tutorials first since it's pretty complicated indeed.

The second comic is the best in my opinion XD and yes, youtube tutorials= MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF USEFUL HELP.
