Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - Cerce - 08-04-2011 Just some suggestions and concerns about this server from a guy who left a while ago... Well, I've been keeping in contact with some people, and they think that this server has lied to them about Kiwike being a roleplaying server in the old-school sence (I'm talking Kubrickb = oldschool, roleplay for types like him and sometimes even me is very, very intricately detailed) and that is why they left. Others have told me upon leaving that they left because others have left (and I'm sorry that a few people left due to my absence). Even others are leaving because some won't leave, such as that spat with NLewis and Pavja and the like. I am not a moderator. I'm not as old or as experianced as some of you. But I think that if this server is looking for quantity over quality, you need to start making this server advertise what it really is: A free-roaming survival server with towny and nations that practice diplomacy; not a 'new generation of roleplay' or 'How Survival/RP/PVP should be done'. You will get many, many new members, I think. Granted, the majority of them might stay a month or two then leave, but you would have a maxed-out server population, even if you can't recognize all the different names. Remember: I am not a moderator. I am a public speaker, leader, and writer, but I have never had to deal with drawing people towards my server or something akin to that. I have no experiance in that department. Keep that in mind; I'm just messaging you guys because I don't want the only good, reliable server I have ever found to go off the deep end because of a few bad apples or misleading slogans. If you'd like quality over quantity, you need to amp this server up. A lot. Quantity would be so much easier; just advertise differently and accurately. But if you want quality roleplayers who are fun, active members (probobly more active than what you would like - remember all those posts that Kubrick and I had written? Think of that, only everyone does it. There have been only a few good servers that are hard-core roleplay that have been able to keep all the stories together accurately), you have got to drop the 'New Age' of roleplaying and pick up the 'Old-School' roleplaying. I'm talking back when 32-bit was the rage; when roleplaying was made not by the fact that you get to pick your own ending, but it was made by the sheer lore behind it. The most current modern-day equivalent roleplaying game would most likely be Oblivion. It litterally has novel-type books within the game that shed lite on the past occurences since the previece game, Morrowind, which, in turn, has novel-type books within the game that shed light on the lore since the last game before that, and etc etc etc. If you truly, truly want this to become the roleplaying server that it is advertised to be, you've got to have standards. For example: There are some 'roleplayers' within this server that have stated, and I quote: ' I have had minecraft ever since 1.4 and have played it ever since. Im also happy that this is the one ,and only server i have EVER played that you can steal on. xD I hope to have good times on this server!' - this should raise some major red flags. Now, if he was an accurate roleplayer, he would not have mentioned stealing, even if he was a thief. What type of roleplaying theif goes around saying he likes the fact that this server allows stealing (besides pavja, simply because of the fact that he is the ringleader and has the power to say whatever he wants withought getting in trouble - but before he came into power, he was very low in public appearances, and actually faught against stealing - which made a perfect cover)? Also, there is no evidence of the fact that he has had past roleplaying experiance. Minecraft experiance should not matter; after all, I suck at minecraft. I just enjoy telling and being a part of a good story. Therefore, it is my honest opinion that you should shave off a lot of the more 'play for kicks and giggles' type of people if you want quantity over quality. Pick those that are litterate, mature (not necessarilly in age - I know a 10 year old who writes better than me and has the best mannner of maturity of someone his age - and he acts better than most teenagers I know), and provide information about their roleplaying goals. Also, you yourself should act as part of the roleplay. It will draw a lot more people in if they know that the person who hosts the server they play on enjoys doing the same thing as them. Anyways, that's just my rant. Feel free to rage, support, whatevs. I just be trollin. Oh, and have more roleplaying events, more detailed player-characters, and the like. That's always good. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - pavja2 - 08-04-2011 ^I agree with the thesis of Cerce's argument I'm returning to kiwike for a bit next week to see about reviving the knights but my guild cannot function in a boring old normal minecraft server. I used to like towny protections and those kinds of mods. In many ways I still do. They prevent greifing which is good. They also make it harder to thieve which is good for my guild (or rather was good). The purpose of the knights was to leverage undercover thieves who were ready and willing to role-play two characters in every part of kiwike. By having members with build-rights in every town people had an incentive to cooperate with eachvother within the guild and work together on raids because this meant that an individual thief could benefit from all of the wealth on the server even if they only had rights in their own town. Then people started protecting their stuff with personal plots and build rights so that they were the only ones who could open chests on a huge chunk of land, effectively adding the same kinds of locking chests that we see on every minecraft server and effectively throttling my guild. With a lack of income my guild began to break up from within, thieves saw no incentive to cooperate with each other and ultimately found it more profitable to attempt to steal from and betray the guild. We had to get town protection to protect our own stuff because we were the only ones on the server without any. The city of Coranis was effectively the death knell of the old knights. I left the server for the summer and my successor was faced with a guild full of traitors, bored and immature pre-teens and people who had never done anything to help the guild other than pay an application fee and then ask for free stuff. I hope that the upcoming Locks&Lockpicks update will replace chest-protection in towns and give my guild a chance to be reborn, otherwise the Knights are probably not going to come back, even if I do. And I think that in many ways guilds like the Knights and the Roadbuilders are essential parts of kiwike. As guilds like these vanish from the server so do their members and having an active Thieves' guild is a major distinction between kiwike and every other minecraft server I have been a part of. The way I envisioned the guild was as an extremely hierarchical chain of advancement which required members to be dedicated and competent and stay on the server for a long time before they could advance to higher ranks and get more rights in the guild. This would solve both the quantity (people joining because there was a thieve's guild) and the quality (people being encouraged to stay and participate on the server in order to advanced). But if server modifications like towny are not restricted or counter-acted in such a way to provide a steady stream of potential income to the guild there is no way we as a guild can do anything to boost the server or even maintain its current state. The sooner it becomes possible for my guild to profit the sooner the server will be revived. Also, on a somewhat relevant sidenote, I do still have *some* gold (500G-800G or so I would guess) so expect to see a bit of an economic influx in the next month or so when my guild gets around to purchasing supplies for our return. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - tristo999 - 08-04-2011 I am Tristo, and the darkness lives within me to this day. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - DARK_DUSK - 08-04-2011 Or maybe that there isn't enough people for RP events. I think the more people the bigger the event will be. Or more RP since there are more people. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - yottabyte - 08-04-2011 Great suggestions. I like this kind of stuff, people who actually speak up and don't just leave for the heck of it. When launching 2.0, I guess we didn't really decide whether we wanted quality or quantity. The problem with the quality, or better roleplaying side is that I, the owner of the server, am a terrible roleplayer. Never roleplayed before. Which is why we need opinions from better roleplayers like Pavja, Kubrick and Cerce. I don't know where this post is going. We still don't know whether to focus on quality or quantity. We kind of want both. Damn. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - MainDigger - 08-04-2011 I really wish there were more roleplaying. Sure, some people make the effort but the general public doesnt always respond. I miss you Cerce. You inspired me to roleplay and invited me to your town. And that led to me meeting Tristo. You were one of my first friends on the server. Thank you Cerce. For everything. And i feel like i was one of the people who made you leave since i left Cerantiace without notice and leaving you almost alone there. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you are doing nowadays. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - DARK_DUSK - 08-04-2011 This made me think but I'm not sure if I should say it but we could add a LEVELING system to kiwike pro: it's gives choice and things that people want to do like I wanna be a yoman or I wanna be a king or a duke ect. Con: it might discourage people in some ways RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - Cerce - 08-04-2011 I think that there should not be levelling. For some reason, people associate roleplay with leveling, purple equipment, and dungeons and dragons. No, that is a genre of gaming; not a way of playing. Roleplaying is playing a role, as I have said in the past. It in no way is limmitted to a specific type of game genre. I have roleplayed in Mount and Blade online, in Minecraft, in Warcraft III (not WoW - with most gamers on there, it's more of a grindfest than roleplaying experiance), etc. It is the act of acting. If you can pretend to be someone else, or even pretend to be yourself (harder done than said), you can roleplay. Leveling would discourage roleplay and encourage grindfesting. Just my two sence. And for the reccord: No, this does not mean I am comming back; I might eventually, once I get some stuff cleared up. I just don't want Kiwike to give up bailing out the water on this sinking server and push it to patch up the holes in the proverbial ship. Who knows? It might even sail better this time. I will never cease to be amazed by the fact that Tristo was arguably the best companion roleplayer on this server. I just never coupled good ol' funny Tristo as the best evil-doer and plague-spreader of Kiwike. Look up Epic Moments of Roleplaying Epicness by TheGeckoWithin eppissodes One and Two - you might get some insight onto the early roleplays with him, me, gecko, and Andy, plus some kubrick and Android thrown in (granted the formers weren't in the video). Just don't stop roleplaying because I stopped showing up. Don't let my epic fail of a nation leader stop you from enjoying a good roleplay, or heck just a simple building contest to see who can make the best mantion. Just keep on digg'n. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - DARK_DUSK - 08-04-2011 Ya I thought u might say stuff like that. RE: Suggestions from a Dying Breed of Roleplayer - stubbkrossen - 08-04-2011 I have roleplayed a lot throughout my short life on this planet. Not on minecraft though, but it's basicly the same principle. And roleplaying is what this server lacks. What it don't lacks, to me it seems is people who do things that appear right to them but not to others which suffer through the others actions. I am just playing along 'til I can find some good roleplaying group here on this server, but so far no evidence of that happening. And Cerce, I never got a reply to my latest message, and that saddens me. Because I didn't know if it was going to be or if it wouldn't happen. I got back onto the server by the fact of something happening. But I only heard that you left... for good as it seems, at least in-game. |
