I'm going to go ahead and claim that it was photoshopped, even if it wasn't. I'll be able to continue to lead a normal life this way.

Oh, that is a pretty common photoshop. It's a plant that has pods that look like that. Usually they have seeds in them, but these don't.
This photoshop originated on 4chan's /b/ some 2 years ago, featuring a woman's breast with lots of these instead of nipples. And people were just as freaked out as you, until someone told them it was a photoshop.
Knees has also been photoshopped this way.

Hoiafar is right is did originate from 4chan.
However it did not start a scare or something.
Someone with trypophobia, which is the fear of holes
And people decided to tease them by posting pictures like that.
Finding out it scared out pretty much everybody on /b/ it became a fun thing to do.
