I've only played a little of SoaSE, but I own all of the versions. However, I didn't get it on steam. Do you think multiplayer will still work with people that do have it on steam?

It should still work, the multiplayer games are through the stardock servers, not steam.

One of my favourite RPG's of all time. Played the shit out of it ever since the first was released. Too bad that it lags like hell towards the 2-3 hour mark of the game unless you have an incredibly good computer due to the massive amounts of trade ships.
