The Afterthought - Android - 09-09-2012

Hello fellow Kiwikians,

As you should know, we've run into a rough patch in terms of server activity, and many of our (still) beloved avid RPers left for various reasons. Needless to say, something had to be done, and it didn't happen soon enough. You should also know that we recently held a staff meeting in which everyone else had the chance to take part in discussion and give their opinion. The discussion ended four hours after it began and what we discussed, among other things, can be found here.

We discussed many things, but the main and overarching problems were current inactivity, and the ever so ominous "What do we do with the server now?" Some suggested that we do what we do best, which seems to be a Light-RP and PvP style of server, where others felt just as strongly about creating a separate and smaller server for Hardcore-RPers only. Below I will outline a few of the larger choices we as a community had come up with, and I'd honestly like to know how each and everyone of you feel Kiwike should continue.

Option #1 - Gecko's Plan

Gecko's plan which had been discussed in a Skype chat not 24 hours ago by Gecko, Cell, Cerce, and myself, included two separate servers from what we have now. Instead of soley Revamped as the RP server, we'd bring a new one with new lore, a new map, new everything, really. This server would have a more intricate application process and we wouldn't expect to have the largest of player bases here. There would be around three moderators dedicated to this separate server, and we'd ultimately be relying on new RPers to come, over the ones that have just recently left us.

tl;dr: Revamped stays pretty much the same but we lighten up on the RP rules to attract a larger playerbase. Turn it more into an RPG server.
A few selected dedicated RPers start working on a whole new separate server for the extreme RP (No xp farms, pvp, very restricted building, no stealing).

Option #2 - Crash's Plan

Crash's suggestion was similar to Gecko's in that the Hardcore RPers and ok-ish RPers would be relatively separate. Crash, however, differentiated in that a new map that would become the main map of Kiwike would be split by a literal wall (think Game of Thrones). On one side, PvP is turned off, Text-Fighting is expected, and overall there is a high expectation for the RP. The other side, as I understood, was for those who preferred what Revamped currently is. One would be able to build mob grinders and whatnot.

tl;dr: Delete the entire revamped world and start from scratch. Make a wall in the new world that divides hardcore RPers and casual RPers. The hardcore side of the wall would have more restricted RP rules and no pvp. The other side would be pretty much Revamped in it's current state.

Option #3 -Cerce/CapBubba's Suggestion

Cap and Cerce were both on the same page with one thing. They both believed that Kiwike was better at appealing to the Light-RP and PvP crowds rather than the hardcore RPers. They ultimately say that rather than trying to appease the RPers, who are willing to relocate easily, we should go ahead and lax such rules related to RP, and go somewhere between 2.0 and Revamped.

tl;dr: Gecko's suggestion, but don't put the effort into creating a new server. It's not worth it. Just get rid of the RP aspect as a whole and stick with Revamped.

Option #4 - End of the World

It wasn't heavily discussed, but we all must have been thinking it. If you choose this option you're either planning to leave Kiwike regardless or have lost interest in Minecraft as a whole. Kiwike isn't low on money so we're not necessarily in the position where we can't afford to support our playerbase - which is reassuring.

tl;dr: Shut down the server, play DayZ instead.

If anyone thinks I left anything out from the options listed or got anything wrong from your suggestion, please feel free to point it out. We're looking to get into the most popular option (most likely), perhaps after further discussion. We don't want to have everyone wait another whole week just to see action from the staff

RE: The Afterthought - Cell - 09-09-2012

I must of missed Crashlander's solution. To tell you the truth, if executed correctly, would be amazing. I doubt that we could do it as well as I would like, but it is a possibility. If anything, I would like to stray from option four.

RE: The Afterthought - StayPuff - 09-09-2012

Let's say option 4 doesn't exist for a moment.

To be honest, all the option's can work, though option 1 and option 3 seem more reasonable than option 2, not saying that it isn't good, but it would require a lot more supervision and a lot more work for it to actually go together smoothly. Not to mention the fact that all of the options would need heavy advertisement to back it all up.

Option 1 is somewhat of a risk. Option 1 seems like you are looking at a small(ish) map if you are going to focus on heavy RP. Obviously the map could expand depending on how many RPers get interested in that particular server. It almost seems like Option 1 is saying have the normal "Kiwike 2.0" kind of server to apply to while having to still pull interest in this heavy RP based server we have over here. I could see Option 1 and Option 3 melding together really well if that happened to be the case.

RE: The Afterthought - AssassinMan98 - 09-09-2012

I think options 1 and 3 would be our best choices, but if i had to choose, i would go with 1.

I think that creating a whole other server dedicated solely to RP is a great idea. I for one have been very dissapointed with the activity in the current Revamped, and I know of many others that agree. And the stricter whitelisting will seperate the terrible, metagamers from the average lght rp-er, from hardcore rp-ers, which is great in my opinion. I joined this server for a great rp experience, so if i could get that back, it would be awesome. A smaller map would be nice, I always feel like it shouldn't take days to get places that could easily be placed in an area, say, an hour (mind i'm speaking in minecraft time). So my vote goes for Option 1.

RE: The Afterthought - borntorule - 09-09-2012

My personal two cents are that either 1 or two would be best, I'll probably stick around one way or another.

RE: The Afterthought - asdfasdflkjty911 - 09-09-2012

I think option 2 is the best.

Why?
Because Kiwike is suppost to be unique, it is, but this could fix our current issue, and raise its uniqueness.

How many servers have you been on that have a giant wall dividing it? Not only does it add a lot of cool RP (for both sides), it would make an environment were either side could still coexist. Meaning, say someone who one day decided they were sick of living in the savage forest on one side of the wall, they could then go to the top and live there, without hate from the civilized side.

The savage side could also have a higher percentage of ore. Making a real reason it is unstable and savage down there, everyone is fighting to gain the most resources. There could also be a spire/dungeon/fortress in the very middle of this area, it could be designed so that anybody could go inside and claim it, and then use it for what ever reason they wish. (perphaps a flag system could be devised, one faction could tell an admin their color is red, and then in the walls near the front gate of said dungeon/castle/fort, there could be a way, with pistons, to open of slits with said color on it. A faction could go into it, capture it, and flip a switch that says they own it, or shows their color). This would add a more RP reason for the savageness in said area as well. This castle could have the background of being some ancient dwarf castle that was overrun and changed by say humans, they were overrun and the castle was changed slightly by say a groupe of rouge elves, ext. Now its just a secure and strategic outpost that anyone can try to claim. Inside and around it could be pre-made (mideval) looking mines that would be efficient to mine in (lit up well and lots of large hallways to branch off of).

The civilized side could have a large city at the front gate, then two medium-large cities on two other gates along the wall. The civilized side could also close or open these gates. Maybe some maze system, or system of traps on the savage side, at the end being either a passageway to the top (that couldnt be blocked by someone on that side) or a switch to open the gate. This passageway would be very deadly, with lava (so even diamond armor wont help you if you fall into it, it'd be a big gamble to make, and would be very, very difficult).

The civilized side could also have a few other large builds people could do early on (to create more lore for the map) or other things that people could write lore for and get permission to build with creative mode, as to create more quests, and to create an overall better RP environment (like yotta said, someone who gets this wouldn't have the ability to drop items in creative mode, place chests, ore blocks, or anything of that sort, if it was absolutely necessary they could ask a new type of mod, an "RMod" (roleplay moderator) who could give them like two diamond blocks, if it was absolutely necessary for their design.

This would create a more unified kiwike (more so than having two completely separate maps) and would be very, very unique to other RP servers.

RP would be required on either side, just on the savage side there would be more PvP, and civilized would have no PvP except for text fighting.

RE: The Afterthought - geckosquid - 09-09-2012

^Excellent points. Good work.

RE: The Afterthought - Leech - 09-09-2012

Asdf, how was your first time having a point? I kid, Asdf makes some solid arguments, and makes me question my vote. I think 1, myself. With 2 servers or 2 worlds, the hardcore RPers can go to the light RP world when they're in the mood for a lighter RP or a PvP experience, which would be a good way to keep people around. Creating the world(s) would likely take less time, and we could get the new world out sooner. On another point, expect a little suggestion thread from me here soon

RE: The Afterthought - Crashlander04 - 09-09-2012

My idea did not constitute mob grinders, and I believe is being misinterpreted. May my own explanation be substituted please? (Perhaps even a vote reset) I feel like my idea has been undermined as utter liberalism and given a false start off.

--> A new map would be created to replace Revamped and focus on more defined and pre-set lore, as well as outstanding RP. While character creation would still be up to the player themselves, the map plan is the defining factor.

The map would be divided by a large wall, of which significant lore would support (wait for it).

On one half (I say half figuratively) of the map several permanent, prebuilt states/nations would be set up. These states would use Territories as the protection plugin, and allow players to inhabit them while carrying out RP. This part of the map would require text-based fighting (which will be explained and regulated further) to ensure the highest quality level of RP available for those who seek it. PvP would be disabled, of course. Land outside of the prebuilt states would contain many possible quest options given by NPC's (or even volunteers who wish to make that their RP character a guide) in prebuilt settlements or other miscellaneous locations. Adventures, extensive RP, and many RP quests or activities would be run through predetermined lore. Small alternative settlements/factions may also exist throughout this land. Much of this part of the map would be prebuilt - but many 'wild' areas would be alterable for the sake of requiring realistic resources and completing quests.

On the other half of the map (on the other side of the wall), RP would also be expected, to the highest degree possible (as has been expected since Revamped launched) - however PvP would be enabled for those who wish to carry out RP in a way they feel is more realistic. This area would be considered dangerous wilderness - free for bandits, hunters, nomads, and any sort of character to roam at their own risk. PvP would still require RP reason. This area would be largely unclaimed by factions, and open for players to build small RP settlements (with a constant theme fitting to RP confirmed by the staff as well as block protection). These settlements could be temporary bandit camps, rebel outposts, or simply a tough group of settlers who don't mind fighting off the dangers of RP oriented PvP. This area is still to be kept RP oriented, and the setting held as pristine as the other.

The theme would remain fantasy medieval (with slightly less steampunk for realism's sake, but still basic include basic machinery). The allowance of intricate redstone contraptions is still debatable, however the necessity of these seems unlikely regardless. Whether or not the nether would be accessible is also debatable, as it may be prove either necessary for resources or useful and fun for RP quests. (Splash potions and enchantments would still need to be regulated, and made few and far between [if not removed entirely] in the PvP enabled area considering sheer ability to powergame)

Players could indeed cross sides of the map for the purpose of interacting with other characters, adventure, or anything else. RP would ALWAYS be expected of players, regardless of the part of the map they are in. However, the distinction of PvP and text-based fighting applies to all players depending on what side of the map they are located on.

The idea of this map is to cater to both sides of the PvP/text-based fighting argument, while providing and requiring outstanding RP from both. The requirement of builders, and the option of volunteer quest guides would let the server's current population take part in the creation and administration of the server, instead of leaving the conduct to the staff solely. This type of server is like nothing we've seen before in terms of RP, and really does offer most of the community access to the aspects of Kiwike they have enjoyed most.

RE: The Afterthought - spenboy - 09-09-2012

I like option 3, i would hate to restart the map, and i think option 1 is a good plan, but option 3 appeals to me as a better, quicker choice, it could be put into effect relitively quickly, and is a fine plan.

Not a fan of option 2, i'm bad at pvp, so i wouldnt like the pvp side, but i also hate chat fighting, so for me it would be a lose-lose.
