IRC connected with OOC - Leech - 09-09-2012
IRC, or Internet Relay Chat, is a widely accepted chat protocol, and has been a staple of the internet for a long time. Kiwike even used to have a IRC chatroom! And, with the help of MonsterIRC, we could easily integrate IRC into our OOC chat! This could allow for users who may be away from their home computers, whether they be on their phone or another computer, to easily interact with the community. And chat moderation could be done from anywhere, with moderators being able to read the chat from anywhere

Increased moderation
May help increase activity
Cons:
May increase reliance on OOC
Names may be hard to verify

Perhaps a demonstration would be needed? This idea seems cool, but I'm not sure I'm understanding all of it.

I agree with crash. I think it sounds really cool, and has lots of benefits, but this technical talk is killing me, can u show something to help?

Let's boil down how IRC works. You first find a chat client (such as mIRC). A chat client tends to be barebones, showing just text and emoticons. Then, you would join a server via a command,and begin typing. In this case, you would be connecting to the Kiwike server, which would be connected to the in-game chat. You would type something into the IRC client, and it would show up in game, falling under the IRC username you set. You would, in turn, be able to read OOC messages from people in-game. Hope this clears a bit up, may be able to explain kore in the morning

MonsterIRC isn't the client, it's the bukkit plugin. Yotta could put up a java or HTML5 (No flash cause flash sux) client on the website

We have the Console for that
Only problem I see is the lack of accountability for flaming, as an example, by someone using the IRC who could have their name set as anything, even another person. Perhaps if this was controlled by the need to use your Minecraft username in any way it'd work out well enough.

HTML 5 would allow it to work on phones but IRC is accessible by phone as well so we should use that. I think it sounds like a good idea, assuming no impersonation could occur.
