They looked cool... but only being able to open them from the inside was a drag.

You could open them from anywhere so long as you wired redstone to it in the correct way. You either never used them properly or have something else in mind.

I mean, the ones that I saw in towns. I would always get locked out because someone decided to close the gate before they logged out.
Piston doors are much nicer.
