Maybe someone new could get some sort of activity going, even if thats a completely different play style and community.
I don't want to see Kiwike vanish completely

I feel as if this event will remind people that we have a decent community and some people might start being active again?

This was an old idea I came by and I thought it'd be cool if we redid this. Basically we'd have a 800 x 800 map , with the nether going into about 300 x 300. Teams of 2 , 3 (debatable) and the aim would be to be the last team standing. It's sort of a hunger games but except it'd be a slightly more prolonged and tactical game. This game mode sounds much better than a 8 man RFW where yotta and DJ unfairly choose who's playing , and it allows for a lot more people to play. And it's about time we had a server event

So, there are people complaining about the low number of regular players, and low levels of activity (this is not the same thing). I too am concerned about the feasibility of the server at present – partly few people to interact with, plus there is the risk of all my work vanishing if the server folds – which appears to be about to happen.

Gira’s post expresses similar concerns. I too have noticed that a number of people log on, see no one else is on or there is little to do, and they leave again. Certainly, things like Spawn need work – but we need to look past that for a minute, and examine the CORE mechanic that we want from the server.

I should add at this stage, as it was suggested on Gira’s thread, to be honest, if the server closed / map reset – I would be annoyed and would NOT return. I had been assured this was not going to happen, else I would have left sooner. Having ones work deleted is not fun – unless of course my constructions were ported to a new map and items moved over. Plus, even if you did port across 3 months later, I will have found something new by then! Others may feel the same.

There are several aspects to a potential server: PvP, PvE, Building, Raiding, Territory, War, Economy, Roleplay, Protection. Those we choose define the server gameplay style, the people who play, and their activity levels.

So, the question is what to do. Firstly, we need to decide on WHAT people want, before the HOW. I think some HOWS are in motion, but the WHAT has never really been addressed. So, I am going to comment on all of the aspects, and invite feedback. I am not asking for comments necessarily on HOW – that comes later.

PVE & Building
Now, while PvE and Building are essential aspects – you can get these from single player on your own local host, why go to a multiplayer experience, so this by itself is not enough. That said, they are still important aspects, which is one of the reasons Kiwike is attractive because it’s not an anarchy server – you don’t need to worry about someone just destroying what you built.

However, Kiwike is Vanilla. Having to grind your way through miles and miles of rock mineshafts to get ore and materials eventually gets very tiring and repetitive. I think that’s what drives people to try and cheat. And there are only a few types of ore and material in vanilla, and only so many ways you can build castles / houses etc. It all gets dull after a while.

There are 100’s of mods. Big ones like Buildcraft, Industrial Craft, Railcraft etc all add many new materials and craft recipes, and let you build all sorts of extra stuff AND automate some of the 'boring' aspects. So, it takes much longer to get bored. There are also redstone and computer mods that let you build more versatile and whacky creations and defences. And so on.

PVP & Rivalry / War
For me, PvP is an important part of multiplayer, but I don’t think it should be the SOLE focus - but woven into the OTHER aspects.

Combat is not that complicated in Vanila minecraft (this is not, after all, Battlefield 2, or Counterstrike etc). Basically, you make potions, enchant items, and then click really fast. There are not that many successful combinations. If that was all there was in the game, then for many, it would get old real fast, so there needs to be other things to do in game (see other sections).

However, all that said, I would NOT be interested in playing on a non-PvP server. Simply building stuff and walking around, knowing that no one could ever threaten me, is little different to the single player game. I could just build stuff in creative mode, and email screenshots. It’s all pointless. I like the idea of building traps and defences.

I think one of the MAIN attractions for me and others of Kiwike, is that unlike many PvP servers, it is not an anarchy server. Whilst there is PvP, there are rules on griefing, vandalism etc.

Problem #1 is, as I said above, is that vanilla combat at the moment is quite limited (few winning setups, and click lots up close), especially when advertised as a controlled PvP server. If you want to attack a town, the best you can do is build a TNT cannon. Which you cannot prepare in advance, and you have to manage to build on the front line during action, and it is extremely limited. It generally only fires along x or z. You could be clever about it, but then it grows into a monster the size of a town on its own!

There are all sorts of mods out there, with guns, artillery, cannons, mortars etc. This all ties in with the territories category, but a range of static defences, mobile weapons (artillery pulled by pig etc) and guns, one could rage proper battles and sieges.

Problem #2 is that there needs to be a POINT to violence. Just killing person X for the sake of it, gets old very soon. Going around dominating combat for an individual may be fun for them until their prey just rage quits. And perhaps a feud can add a point to some 1vs1 fighting.

However, the main form of combat at the moment is group from a town trying to overwhelm another town. At most, they may gain some bounty in the raid. But what happens is group A raids B, later group B raids A. That is a very limited scenario, which quickly gets very old!

For true point to combat, you need CONQUEST. Most games, of most genres, are based on the historical fact that humans fight for GAIN. Be that power, or resources. Kiwike currently lacks this. Partly because all resources are uniformly spread across the world. If more important resources were in smaller areas, and there was a way of locking off chunks to others through some sort of territories. People would have to FIGHT for access (or trade - see economy).

Perhaps you would have to build control towers, which need to be held for several hours to be taken or destroyed? I am thinking how Planetside worked.. This would also stop any group getting too powerful - if it an empire gets too big, they cannot hold it.

Economy
Personally, this is of limited interest to me unless it ties into territories (as above). At the moment, in most cases, the effort required in making / getting cash to buy something, is the same as getting the actual item for myself. In minecraft, almost all materials are in abundance and roughly equally spread over the map. No groups have monopoly on a certain items, so there is no reason to trade. (This is one thing that makes Civilisation 5 better than 2 – you had to hold parts of the map to get certain goods, or trade to get them, and it worked both ways).

Plus, at the moment the economy is a mess. We have adopted emeralds as currency, with a certain number of players having exploited prior bugs that are sitting on massive amounts of cash, so the economy is hyper-inflated and out-priced many.

To me, an economy could only be made more attractive, if it somehow became necessary or a real time-saver. Perhaps, if we introduced things like industrial craft / buildcraft mods then that would generate an industry which could then trigger more of an economy. Plus, give people who are into building and crafting more to make – especially weapons (see PvP). And the PvP’ers more toys to buy then play with? And town people more to defend with?

Is it possible to limit certain more advanced ores / materials to move limited areas of the map – so territorial control gave people control over certain goods – forcing trade?

Roleplay
Roleplaying, I’m indifferent to. I have no objections to there being a plot / history to the world. But, it would only ever be window dressing. It doesn’t change the fact that the core workings of the game need to be there to keep people interested in the long run. Otherwise, once you have explored the castles and the story, you go.

I think lite-RP is a great way to draw in new players. Heavy RP will scare them away. All told though, if the server is empty or boring, the RP will not keep them for very long at all.

That said, I am very concerned by the creation of a new Kiwike-RP server. I think spreading an already thin player base will just lead to one of the servers being abandoned, or both failing.

Protecting Stuff – Locked Chests
I can certainly see why it is important to be able to protect your stuff. Sure, you can bury your stuff randomly around the place, scattered across the world and hope the X-ray police keep it safe. However, that’s hardly convenient for some items that you want to keep close at hand. You don’t want on every new spawn to have to go digging for kit in several places. It's not a fun way to "live".

But at the same time, raiding and PvP are a fun part of the game. It’s a balance. Nothing promotes a rage quite like having your entire stock stolen. But in moderation, it’s fun to engage in a battle of wits against thieves! (Providing we can stop cheats).

One part of the problem, is being able to protect your stuff whilst offline. No one is ever able to be online 24/7. However, this introduces a new problem in that it actually encourages inactivity at peak times. Why play when lots of people are around who could rob you? Better play when they are not on, so your stash is safe. If someone comes near your base, just log off. Etc.

Also, it means it doesn't encourage activity. Why log on to check on your stuff – it’s safe. It’ll be there in a week or a months’ time if you ever log back on. You don’t have to guard at all.

As an aside. Not sure I like that you never know who locked the chest. So you find some – you don’t know who owns them. Which, I can see the good side to. But, it means I don’t know if I should come back – if I knew who owned it, I may know that they are no longer playing. Or indeed have been banned – and it is locked forever. Perhaps you should be able to identify the owner – which later alerts the owner that person X has looked at your chest when they come online. There would be scratches on the lock from trying to pick it...Also, I’m not clear on how locking picking works. Does the owner get a warning message when someone picks it while they are online?

Protecting Stuff - Towns
Towns are in many ways a bit OP. One can’t break blocks, or place blocks. You can’t lay down TNT – you have to project it from outside the town. They require ender pearls and some thinking to break into. This does risk a bit of a two-tier system, in that those who are loners are at a huge disadvantage. Once found, they can be raided, and they have no hope of raiding back. This may frighten away some players. However, there does need to be an advantage to towns. So, I am on the fence.

As with the chest locks, it’s a case that once built, the protection of a town requires zero activity or upkeep. If resources AND activity were required and perhaps rare resources, to keep a town safe – then people would need to be active to get these, and with a territory scenario, would need to hold land in order to get these.

One option, may be to port in the forcefield mod. Instead of the current block protection system - one can then shield off a base.

This uses fuel, and so, if the people are inactive, the power runs out and the base is open. Also, the shield has a recharge rate, so if hit with huge amounts of TNT it could be overwhelmed. Or at least burn through the fuel much much faster – so town designers would want to design reserve power systems etc.

Towns & Territory
I am not currently hugely thrilled with the current town system. Sure, I am planning to apply for one soon, because I am one of the very few not to be within one, and am feeling vulnerable – I am relying on no one using x-ray or other methods to find where I am based. However, I’m not convinced that towns are currently an asset to the server, and may be detrimental in their current form. I wonder if they make newcomers feel too threatened?

It just seems very limited and dull. Towns just raid each other and generally ignore the rest of the map (except deep underground mining). If they were capitols for territories, I would see a point. But at the moment, they can be ignored by non-town players and it doesn't affect them. With a territories system, everyone could get caught up in the wars etc.

Last Thoughts
In terms of making good defences etc.:

It would be nice if a special block could be made that sends a redstone trigger when a portal is entered / exited.

Likewise, a block that records all the people who walk over it.

Hello everybody.

This post is sort of a continuation from Dr_Vesalius's open debate , and I would just like to highlight some stuff and go on to talk about this long standing issue. I am not concerned about Kiwike continuing. I know that the RP server is going to be infact quite popular , from plans that I've heard from geckosquid himself they truly do sound quite epic.

However , The PVP server as of recently is plain dead. With the only active players really being myself , Pwolbart and Sethd and Dr_V. And I'm concerned that everyone is going to leave for the RP server and this server will shut down if stagnation in activity and improvement keeps going this way. The truth of the matter is , the server released before anything had actually been done. And when after two weeks people realized there was nothing to do and they got bored , the spawn wasn't finished , most of the plugins were not added at that time. And now there's promises for things to be added which will spark activity , all of which are not even happening.

Some people may argue that it's because we're not seeing anybody new around here , I assure you this is not the case - the case is that once you join the world there's nothing to immerse you into it. There's no players online and nothing to do or no clear path to follow. This was a serious problem in Revamped as-well , There was simply nothing to do especially as a newbie. Let's be honest here. Everyone joins their certain groups. Everyone sticks to their groups. There was are towns built around the spawn area to explore and nothing to venture to. No set goal in any aspect whatsoever and as a result this immediately repels new players from the server. The most recent 'ACTIVE' new player we've encountered is Dr_Vesalius. And that's about it.
Let's give an example ; recently a group of Finnish people joined the server. About four. And the first thing they ask me is what do we do on this server. And it's like. Wow. This server needs guidelines for new players. Things to do. Interesting plugins which will entertain the general community. Things that will make them stay.

And now I don't mean to fault the administration , however it seems a general sense of giving up is widely practiced within the staff. Many people might say it's school and such that's causing the inability to code (Yottabyte >_>) and the little input of ideas (Mods >_>) But it's really just that you've rushed something that takes time to create. You can't just release a server and when it goes wrong decide to make some interesting things which are going to take full months to code and plan out. I know I'm going to get shit for this , but as a person which is fairly active I believe there still is hope for the server.

People play servers for a variety of reasons , how fun it is to do so and other things. But eventually this dies out of interest. Something this server needs to incorporate into it's priorities is community based interaction. That way the people feel like a part of the server , and are more likely to play. We needs events (Player created) and such which will keep people playing and on the way meet new people and generally become more interested in the server. The problem with systematic events is that it's to repetitive and to be honest is just plain boring.

Once again I'd like to emphasis on the point of the server being rushed. Look at the RP server for example. They are planning everything carefully and are actively doing so. I believe Dr_V hit it right on the dot when he said it's to Vanilla. Think about it , there's over a thousand different servers which are exactly the same shit. Vanilla - ish. This is why we really need some creativity on this server. There needs to be output and input. You can't just keep saying oh we're going to add A and B and it takes you a century to add them (Or maybe it will never happen) It just doesn't work like that.

The idea of the server at the start was controlled PVP. The only pvp I interact now a days is just outright cold murder with no interesting factors. Nothing that matters , right now the only plus of fighting is just gear. There's no rewarding feel to it. Nothing interesting. It's just exactly like an anarchy server. In the sense of PVP.

So after all that ranting , I'm just going to say this plain and straight. Something needs to be done.

Here is a list of suggestions , which after talking with some people they suggested this

1) Close the server , Delete the map. Fix all the problems , input popular suggestions and then code everything and then release a pretty cool server which will surely rack up a lot of dedicated players. Have a fresh forum application which will surely attract attention. Or don't even have an application in the first place. Make the forum nice and interesting and have obvious guidelines. Implement goals.

2) Actually start repairing the server instead of talking but not doing anything. ^ All of that.
Keep the map and such and keep the server going.

3) Delete the server , and just ride on the hope the the RP server does amazing.

So now I ask you , what do you think fellow kiwikeians?

- I will update this if I feel it's worth the time to

Alright boys , All this time we've talked about vendors and what not to boost the economy because it's just stupid and boring right now and isn't really a economy because there's no competition. So to improve this I have taken some elements from another economy I once came by and have implemented my own ideas into it.

1) We add a electronic market. This ensures that the economy is much more accessible to the playerbase and can have an easily competitive environment. All you'll have to do to enter items is have the items in your inventory and do /Deposit 64 stone [Insert price] And it'll be accessible by everyone through the command of /Price 64 stone and /buy 64 stone [Price]. This instantly allows for many features such as undercutting and Strategic thinking when dealing with the market , if someone undercuts you you'll have to buy their stock and resell and stuff like this. To deposit money into your bank account you'll have to have the Currency (Fuck emeralds) In your hand and do say /Deposit 64 and it'll deposit 64 into your electronic bank account. This removes the hassle of stupid ass markets and vendors and unwanted crap that's going to take yotta a century to code. The problem with markets is that there's no reason to spark activity , but with this new competitive environment they'll be a reason for people to get on. This cannot be abused , as once you store the items you cannot retrieve them. Therefore you'll have to think.
The main problem with the current economy is that having a banker and so is just time - wasting. The currency will actually be worth something instead of locks and towns. This will also spark activity because you'll have to be on to gather materials and so - Thus making more people play. An instance where this can be handy far away from markets is say you're mining underground and you forget to bring torches , then /buy 30 torches 5. And it'll automatically do the math of the current price for 30 torches and just take the needed amount.
The process goes - Collection - Putting it into the market - Reward. And with this smart people will prevail , as they'll analyse demand and supply and make a sort of idea of which things sell best. Therefore encouraging more than just going around sword clicking.

2) We're going to need a new currency for this. Gold ingots preferably. Many people have done the glitch for emeralds , and if this system comes to place we need a new currency so everyone starts off on par.If this system comes into place I for one will be active dominating the market. And I can see many other people such as Dr_Vesalius and so being online because this actually rewards hard - work and makes you noticeable.

Note for undercutting 0. Will have to be added

Removing total block protections from towns

We want your input on this idea, should we make it so that a town never has full protection?

We would change it so protection of towns is constant, and not effected by how many players are online like how it currently is. At all times it will be possible to break blocks in another's town, but it is always very slow (because mining fatigue is limited, we may also make it so you must break the block several times before you actually break it). Also, when the blocks are broken, they will not drop anything and will regenerate after an extended period of time (similar to creeperheal, but much longer). Therefore, it would not be virtually pointless to be online like it is currently.

People would be able to steal from other's towns whenever. What this will do, is allow for one town to steal from another town. The town that got stolen from will want to retaliate, so they go and steal from the town that stole from them. The town that initially stole from the other town will see this, and therefore want to get online in order to defend their stuff. This will create a reason for people to want to be online and will offer much more opportunity for conflict with others. They will need to fight or loose their stuff, creating PvP encounters, tensions, wars, etc... This, coupled with a greatly needed debuff on the massively OP enderpearls, and enderchests for people to store all of their most valuable stuff and not risk it getting stolen, will create a new, useful dynamic for the server.

Please put any input you have on this idea below and vote on whether or not you think this would be a good idea above. Thanks!

Hi All.

Without wanting to step out of place or on the toes of Yotto et al, I am concerned about Kiwike continuing, and thought perhaps we should have an open debate about the future. Hopefully, not starting a troll or flame war either.

I think I turned up when the server "reboot" was quite fresh, which I think also happened to coincide with half-term in the UK for the younger people. There were normally always a handful of people on, with peak numbers of around 20.

However, since the opening week, for the last 1.5 weeks kiwike has been a ghost server. At most, I have seen two others on at the same time, but normally when I turn up there is no-one. It's like playing single player! I hang around for some time doing stuff - and I feel like its my own private world.

Clearly, this not sustainable and so I am asking the impertinent question of what's going to happen and / or be done about it.

Firstly, should I continue to invest time mining and building in this world? Or am I clocking up a lot of effort, only for the server to be turned off and the world and my creations lost? Does anyone here feel the server will continue?

Secondly, the question is WHY is the server so empty?

Obviously, diminishing numbers are self perpetuating. When someone logs on to find only 1 other, they log off straight away. This means that numbers do not generally build up during any session, and the place stays deserted.

What attracted me to Kiwike when I stumbled on it was that it was PvP, but with some sensible constraints on griefing, so it was not an anarchy server which would rapidly lead to rage quit. Whilst searching for a server, most seemed to be strictly PvE and no PvP, which begged the question to me - what was the point in playing online? So, KiWike seemed like a fun thing to try.

I was never convinced by the OP 'town' system and the forming of small groups of people - but I was sticking with it to see where it went. However, it seems that others do not know or care about Kiwike, and those that have discovered it do not like it enough to come back to it.

I wonder if the following is informative about where the server is going:
My wife's co-presenter teenage son is a MC addict (and following his school report will be curtailed a bit!). When I directed him towards Kiwike he was dismissive, because it wasn't proper "factions" - and towns as I described them were just too limiting to be of interest. Plus, it was also vanilla, so nothing special there either. So, he continues on other servers.

Perhaps changing features / vanilla-ness of the server should be debated if numbers are to be attracted??

At the moment, Kiwike is supposed to be controlled PvP. And in that regard it has failed atm - as there is never anyone on to talk to, let alone fight / stalk / raid etc.

Thoughts and comments are welcome.

Hey folks'

Just come up with a new idea for a plugin and would like to know your opinions

ARENA PLUGIN
Arena plugin would allow two players to enter an arena for a fee. (e.g Each player pays 3 Emerald) This would be the winning players victory money when they win. So victor of the match would gain 6 Emeralds. Additionally, an option could be added for players to watch the match. They would pay a fee of 1 emerald and that money would be added to the victors spoils when the match finishes. betting would be an additional charge on top of this for the spectators and would be handled by either a NPC or a command.

The Numbers in this are just examples.

In light of her second birthday, I want to know how everyone found their way to this little slice of heaven we all call home. Vets try to rack your brains to remember, and the noobies here should let us know so we can find the most effective way to advertise. After youve said that, regale us all with some of your favorite memories over the years. Ill start.

I found Kiwike back in the winter of '11 when my minecraft addiction was slowly fizzling out. I had just downloaded WoW, and had gotten all pumped about joining this roleplay guild. Me being me, I did lots of google searches about it, and coincidentally the name of that guild was "The Knights of Dusk". Kiwike popped up on google and so I clicked and read everything on that thread, it was something about how people wanted pavja to show them his bases on the 2.0 map. I read it all thinking it was about WoW. It wasnt until I did a keyword search on Kiwike and read some more that I actually figured it out. Everything just clicked and so I logged in later that day.

Some of my favorite memories on Kiwike was first working WITH Giratina to find Solitude (which we thought was the Northern Alliance). And then fighting AGAINST him. Catching on fire randomly while building my world famous coliseum was pretty fun, and I then went to bargain with him, offering him the Northern Alliances coords if he'd stop attacking, and he accepted. I was so proud of myself for turning my two enemies on each other. Giratina was banned within a day of that deal... Another memory I have is when I snuck out from Promethia to start establishing Enc'ela. (You know, epicketchup was the one who gave me that name, true story) It had the best architecture on the server. Too bad hardly anyone visited... And I suppose my last fond memory was when Shaun and Cheesy were raiding Enc'ela, and Crash stalled them for 10 minutes talking abour bread while I snuck up behind them and showered them with potions. :') Good times, and heres to many more!
