After dying several times through Admin Mode I found this to be the easiest way to avoid death. If your screen is black, signifying that you're underground, and you start to take damage, press escape and log out!

I heard yotta talking about having the chunk loaded before teleporting so perhaps we'll have a much needed fix soon enough!
