About
The Creeper
(I know this is from meme, but i thought i'd share it with you all)
The Creeper is a type of enemy (mob) found in the video game, Minecraft. It sneaks up on unsuspecting players with itâs little green legs and blow themselves up when they are close. It can be found all around the world ingame, often in groups of 2 or more and most likely in caves. It is also the only offensive creature that can be out in sunlight. (Not counting spiders because they become neutral). The other enemies (zombies and skeletons) Will burn and die once the sun comes up. This trait is often taken advantage of and players will lure the Creeper into a box in which it cannot escape there for taming them. On Survival Multiplayer or (SMP) it is common for players to lead the Creepers to an enemyâs house and allow the Creeper to explode therefore destroying that persons base, this is also referred as Creeping, Griefing, or Leading. The Creeperâs ability to appear randomly on the map, combined with itâs messed up looks, no sounds and eerie dead eyes staring direcly at you, telling you that your end is near, is what makes this thing so popular in the Minecraft community, and the internet generally.
Origin
Once Minecraft videos started popping up on YouTube, viewers were, judging by the comments, quite awed when they saw the little green bastards for the first time. (On YouTube, most videos about the Creeper has around 20.000 to 100.000 views.) This is no doubt the roots of the meme. Along with the players themselves. As clearly seen in the pictures, people enjoy drawing stories of their own experience with the sad, suicide maniacs. And some people even make items in real life about them. Pumpkin carvings, mousepads, cardboard cutouts and even papercraft. Found here.
Popularity
Creepers have become the face of Minecraft, even more popular than the actual face of Notch, who created the game. Different people have different reasons for spreading the Creeper throughout the interwebs, but the most common include:
- Showing a screaming player response to a Creeper explosion.
- Manipulating objects, giving them the Creeperâs face.
- Pictures of what the Creeper might look like in real life.
- Pictures representing the terror when mining in a cave (or anywhere else), receiving the vibe that they are being followed.
Spread
The Creeperâs popularity spread is quite the same as the video game itself. But did not become a real meme before people started posting videos of themselvs playing Minecraft. Often involving themselvs getting blown to pieces by the Creeper.
Even though it started in the Minecraft forums, it eventually became a trend for the Creepers to be used as a form of an interruptor. This is due to the sound it makes before it goes off.
Here is a typical situation of a man, his gear.... and his best friend, creeper!
