The Champions of Redstone and their Downfall[WIP]
*Found in a book in the library*
The Champions of Redstone and their Downfall
I write to warn the generations to come. I write for the people in the present to spread the word.
I write so that the past will not be forgotten.
I am Mainford Destig. I used to be a Champion of Redstone.
My story is dark and I regret some moments of it. So when you read this, know that I am not the same person anymore. And don’t be too hasty to judge me. You might just have done the same thing in my situation.
It all started when I was but a foolish teenager at the age of 15. My family was a powerful and rich one, but I prefer to keep any personal information of them out. So there I was, a spoiled youngling who never had done a day of honest work is his life. But I often went out and watched the lives of the common peasants. They intrigued me in a peculiar way. They lived in a different kind of world than i did. Figuratively, of course. I was bored with my life. I wanted excitement.
There was a famous guild who fought for justice and knowledge.
They were called The Champions of Redstone. They were everything I ever wanted. Bloodied warriors in shining armor who had a strict sense of honor and they were highly intelligent. Unfortunately they were not accepting any new applicants but my father had a friend in their ranks so I got in that way. I said my goodbyes to my parents and siblings. I knew I was going away for a long time to train and join the guild but little did I know that when I would come home again, I would be seeing red.
I spent 5 years meditating, researching redstone and practicing the art of combat in the guild. On my 20th birthday I finally became an official Champion of Redstone. Oh, redstone, the fuel of innovation. But the Champions did not just build with redstone. It was also the fuel for their might. They drank a redstone potion made from a secret recipe. This potion infused our blood veins with redstone dust. The redstone gave us inhuman strength, longer lives, sharper senses and made us more intelligent. When I had my first sip of the potion, it was named Redylin if I recall correctly, I felt like I could take on entire armies single-handedly. Before every battle we would take a single vial of it. It was strictly forbidden to take more. We were never told why and the people who did were expelled by our leader, the guildmaster. Our guildmaster was a man called Ralof Redblood. He was a man who ruled with righteousness and kept the peace between several countries. He was the wisest of us all. He was also the oldest, so some people thought it was time for him to step down. But he had the majority on his side so they kept silent.
Now that I was a full member I got my own Champion armor. It was truly a work of art.
That armor has saved my hide several times and has never weighed me down. I was a proud warrior and I enjoyed helping the people in the nearby villages by defending them from bandits and such. Sometimes I even got assigned as a lifeguard for high-profile people.
That was what we did. Helping anyone who was deemed worthy of our help.
=====================================================================
We also smited wicked people who would abuse their power. An example is when my childhood friend used his family's wealth to buy mercenaries and thugs. We had no idea what he was planning but he has always had a grudge against the local authorities. So we foiled his plans by driving away the mercenaries with brute force and making him confess with cruel interrogation.
So maybe we were a little overly violent back then, but it was all to have peace in the land.
Now, I’ll jump 6 years into the future. I rose in the ranks by being ever vigilant and just.
I became a Captain of the Red. I had my own group of people who would be sent out on extra hard missions. Such as clearing out an evil Archmage and such. There was one person in my squadron who I especially liked. His name was Clervan Hardeth. He grew up in a poor family who lived in the slums of a grand city. He was clever, quick and could see things most people don’t. Such as a tiny piece of a dagger sticking out of a robe in a crowd. He got in the guild by saving me from a group of assassins. I was out patrolling in a troubled city when I heard some scream “Watch out!”. It was Clervan who shouted. Just as I turned my head around I saw 6 men leaping towards me from a nearby alley. I dealt with them quickly but without Clervans warning I would have noticed them too late and I would probably be dead. He had noticed their odd behavior and followed them through the city that day. But silently so they wouldn’t notice him.
He thought he could probably snag some coin of the poor sod that they would kill.
But when he saw who their target was a Champion he shouted. His family were saved from captivity some slavers by the Champions when he was young so he respected us.
Clervan was about 18 years old when he joined but he trained hard and managed to become one of our most nimble soldiers in only two years. That really impressed me. And he didn’t even have access to Redylin during his training. He became an unstoppable force with redstone in his blood. He saw through your defenses and found your weak spot in mere seconds.
He was indeed a worthy addition to the guild. But one thing worried me. He became so psyched up by the Redylin that he wanted more, even though he only took a single vial of it. I didn’t notice it until it was too late.
=====================================================================
I woke up one night by the sounds of swords clashing and screams of agony. I quickly put on my armour and went out in the corridor outside my bedroom. It was dark out there. But I could see some spots on the wall much darker than the cobblestone that the corridor was built with.
I walked up to it and touched it. I knew what the substance was immediately. Blood.
The sounds of battle had stopped. There were no more screams. Just deafening silence.
And then I noticed the smell. An extremely foul smell. It struck me like a hammer to the chest. I could barely breathe. It was the smell of flesh burning. I quickly ran to the main hall. I saw no signs of people except blood splotches on the walls and blood trails on the ground.
As I ran past a window out to the courtyard I could see a huge bonfire. I stopped to look at what it.
I already knew what was in there, but it still came as a shock to me. There was bodies in there.
And next to the fire was a large pile of armour. The Champions of Redstones armour.
But still no sign of the attackers. I wondered what group could possibly kill Champions. We were unrivaled in the arts of battle after all. I silently sneaked the rest of the way to the main hall.
As I arrived at the big wooden door, I heard voices inside. Cheering voices. Triumphant voices.
I opened the door and saw that it was my fellow brothers. I was relieved as I stepped out in the room. But then I noticed something strange about them. Their eyes were glowing with a sharp red. I could see it clearly even on those still with their helmets on. And on the throne of the Guildmaster there was a man. Not Ralof Redblood. It was my very own savior, Clervan Hardeth.
But he was but a twisted freak of his former self. His eyes were the eyes of something immortal.
Of something evil. And before I could turn back out in the hallway which I came from he spoke. -“Ah, Sir Mainford! How nice of you to join us! We were just celebrating the start of a new age for the Champions!”
I froze when he spoke. That voice was not Clervans. And he continued speaking.
“Now please, sit down and enjoy yourself!
I turned around only to face a large man. His muscles were swollen and his veins were glowing red. He smiled. I had no time to react and the last thing I saw was a large blunt object coming towards my face.
=====================================================================
I awoke in a familiar place. A place I had visited many times. It was the dungeon under our castle. But this time I was on the bad side of the iron bars. I knew that this was place was sturdy enough to withstand even the strongest brute so there was no point in trying to break out. I remained calm and focused.
There was nothing to do other than to await the judgement of my captors. Then something happened. Something moved in in the jail cell next to mine. The something looked up under its blanket. Well, it would have looked anyway, if it still had its eyes. It now struck me what it was, or rather, who it was. It was Guildmaster Redblood. I tried to stand up only to fall down again. My feet were chained in a meter long chain to the wall. I asked Sir Redblood if he was alright. He recognized my voice, I could see that on his face. First he became glad I was not dead and then his face got grim again as he realized that I was stuck in there with him. He did not answer but did only one thing. He just opened is mouth and pointed. Where there was supposed to be a tongue there was not. I just stared at him for a minute.
A voice broke the silence.
-“We cut his eyes and his tongue out.”
I turned around to face the man who spoke. There was Clervan.
-“He was blind to the truth, so we cut his eyes out. And he spoke only the words of a madman so we cut his tongue out. I think there’s some poetic justice in that.”
Clervan smirked. I didn’t say a word. I just sat there, glaring at him as if I tried to kill him with my thoughts. He spoke again:
-”Anyway, I thought that you might be hungry. You have been knocked out for quite a while now.”
I was hungry, but I did not want wipe out the little pride I still had left so I said nothing.
-”Not speaking with me, are you Mainford? Very well. I’ll just put this plate here.”
He pushed an wooden tray under the iron bars. There was some dried meat and bread there. Nothing to drink, though. My throat was burning with thirst.
-” Don’t worry, you’ll get something to drink.” he said as he took up something from his pocket. It was a vial with a red liquid in it.. He took the vial and poured its contents in a glass of water.
“-Here. This is not Redylin. It’s another Redstone substance. Drink enough of it and you’ll see the truth like the rest of us. Or die of thirst. Your choice.”
He then left. After he had closed the door and was out of sight I started to eat. The plate was clean of food very quickly. I did not drink the tainted water though. I then went to sleep.
Two weeks went by and I never saw Clervan. A jailor started bringing me food. And more tainted water. At last I succumbed to my thirst and I drank the contents of the glass.
I regretted it instantly. My head started hurting like someone was hitting it with a iron hammer. I saw my blood veins start pulsating red. My entire body felt like it was on fire.
As I lay there and cramped on the floor a voice in my head spoke:
-"Welcome to the collective..."
