Recommendation - Moderation vs. Punishment: Please vote or input opinion.
I suggest that the staff as a whole, but more centrally the game moderators be given guidelines of moderation to follow instead of punishment. While punishment seems to be the easiest, and most basic form of enforcement in the game - there is very rarely a case in which a permaban is required.
No situation is ever black and white - so why should verdicts be made up of but two options? While temporary banning is necessary in some cases, I feel it is far too overused as a punishment.
Though the difference would be of course slight, and almost more of a recommended approach, I believe that moderators should take part in the basis of their name: moderation. If a player breaks a rule (or is suspected, or blamed of doing so) - they should be interrogated thoroughly, warned, and made to work towards fixing that rule breakage.
Of course, if ignorance of the warning is demonstrated clearly and purposefully, then a temporary ban may be applicable.
This is an online videogame server and, though regulated, Minecraft is made for people to have fun. Permanent bans for people who wish for second chances, and honestly wish to continue properly should not be made indefinite for past mistakes. Forgiveness, tolerance, and compassion aren't going to ruin the server - and we do have rollback capabilities if anything goes wrong.
