The mod API is Bukkit, which is why the Bukkit people works at Mojang now.
Last thing I heard, they are making SSP into a local SMP server so they don't have to update SMP and SSP individually. So you pretty much can invite friends to come play on your SSP world if you want to. This way you only need one API. This is the way most source games do it, like Garry's Mod.

Wow, really? That's what I kinda thought multiplayer was back when I only played SSP. I'm really glad
