They used pistons to controll the flow of lava, they were bukkit pistons, but with real ones , would work better

The lava, was used as a a Battle pit, where it was sand at one point, then boom, filled with lava and the 4 sides of the pit fell down and filled with lava

Thats what pistons would be prime for

Sticky pistons that is

LeverPress---->, Piston with block stuck to it,------> Moves to blocks source block of Lava, -------> sand block floor gets moved up

And to change it to a battlepit -------> Piston with block stuck to it ------> Moves back from sourceblock, which flows into a pit (Where the sand block floor gets moved down, and filled
