Meh, as I said, it's way more fun to have your character speculate, just like in the real world. And official lore would be meta until your char reads it in a book or gets told by someone or something.

That would be very cool when Notch adds writable books to the game :D

But as far as RP goes, i'm the kind of person who will happily rp if other people around me are doing it :)
