The lock system only benefits nomads, and even then they can be picked. In the end money is just wasted by everybody involved.

That's as realistic as any vault in the medieval era, it's only inconvenient.

You are right that gain is to the thieves, and why shoudend they be? They do deserve an upgrade from totally impossible because of a single block over the chest. and that upgrade is to a lock that can be picked under hard cirumstances
