And a long greeting by Cerce Wink

Any who, welcome to Kiwike!

In relation to your questions, aligning with a nation and/or town can either amp up you experience, or bring it down, depending on the person of course. If you're one who likes to stay completely secluded from society, build in the wilderness. If you want to be active within the community, join a nation, get involved with conflicts or be a nomad bent on trading for gold. Personally, I would suggest joining a nation. It's my opinion as a person who loves to interact with the community, and am also interested in politics. Also, if you are in a town, you should definitely feel free to build in the wilderness. I might suggest building a home so they don't forget you live there, but adding a restriction to building in that town would be no fun at all.

Welcome again! Hope to meet up with you in game at one point or another.
