Advertisement and protection of roleplay, adaptability and /involvement/ of the administration in roleplay (but not guidance and not sole leadership), encouragement and involvement with the administration to create user-based goals and ideals, fresh map, update to the latest version (It shows I can't connect, this might be client side, I'm not sure, even when I revert to 1.6.4).
The rest is pretty much entirely up to us, the community. Server politics and plugins aside, ultimately the server is what we make of it.

What separates it is the people that you create goals with, and what 'genre' of goals you create them in.
A PvP-mindset goal is generally domination over other players. Survival is generally oriented around building a building you would be happy with and collecting ample supplies. But roleplay is something much more. Instead of you thinking about clicking enough blocks (or people) in order to reach your goal, you actually have realistic player interaction beyond just 'join this guild and get weapons/supplies so that we can go destroy the enemy'. You can found a religion based around the worship of bananas dipped in peanutbutter for God's sake, let alone come up with a viable explanation for how we can store thousands of items in our pockets and make a scientific guild devoted to solving the mysteries of the universe. You can come up with an /entirely new governmental system/, write a book about your exploits, shape something of a server that people can look back on and point to as a moment in history. The Grand War is about as important to Kiwike's historic lore as the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 is in our natural history here on Earth. Seriously, think about it - that war was a milestone in history. That's freaking awesome. Now, name one other server that you can point to and say 'I can do that there /and/ have fun with people that are actually nice, (slightly) mature, and fun to be around!'
