RE: Three year anniversary!
It seems like there is a consensus as to how a new server should be constructed if it is started (correct me if I am wrong): Small world, present but not strict RP/lore, and territories to make the world more interesting. I agree with this formula too.
Also, speaking to the small world conversation, I think the world size should be even less than 2000 x 2000. Like Yotta mentioned, it should be small enough that towns are no more than a few hundred blocks from each other. It doesn't matter much how many people are on a server at once if none of them interact in-game. If you have a server that averages 100+ people at any moment, but the world is 50,000 x 50,000, the server will feel empty because everyone is so spread out no one can interact with other players. On the other side of the spectrum, if you have a server that averages no more than 5 people at any moment, but the world is 500 x 500 blocks, the world might even seem crowded because the density of players is much higher.
While a larger world has some benefits (such as having more to explore), I think the benefit of a more densely populated world outweigh those because it will make the server feel more active (and therefore more fun), even if it isn't. In my opinion, I think something in the range of a 1000 x 1000 world for ~10 players/day would be a good size, but that is just speculation.
