I'm going to make a full post relating to this at some point but taking screenshots to document your discovery of someones vault (ie their name showing up underground) might be a good idea if you are making a particularly awesome hiest having proof that its legitimately is probably a good idea.

Doesn't really matter, as mods should be block checking everything to ensure the chest wasnt found by dumb luck or skill. For example, I clear off 2-3 layers of flooring as most people hide chests that deep under their house. It takes a little bit of time but I always find either an entrance or chest. I simply replace all the blocks I destroyed afterwards.
