Yes but you can also buy gametime with ingame currency, so if you're good enough you can play for free.

RE: Anyone here plays EVE Online?
I played a 60 day trial I got from a friend(StargateNerd). I trained, shot stuff, mined and delivered stuff.
So eventually I have trained enough to get a somewhat good ship, a Merlin.
And Stargate bought me the ship and said "Hey, let's go shoot stuff! I have a quest in null-sec."
So I scouted ahead since Stargate didn't want to lose his Apocalypse by getting ambushed.
Everything went fine and dandy and we didn't encounter any other players. So we got the the quest location and Stargate said:
"Just stay behind me and warp away if anything shoots you." (This was a high level quest so the enemies were to though for me)
So he went in first and started firing his lazors but the first thing that the NPCs does is warp scramble me.
I'm dead in 3 seconds. And with the ship getting destroyed so did also my will to play EvE.

I've lost a ship in a much worse/stupider scenario. You know when you're on autopilot, you can choose to stay in higer or low security regions. What I didn't know was that there's also a slider that sets how much your autopilot listens to this, my slider was at zero so it didn't give a fuck if I was in nullsec.
And ofcourse I was making a major move, I had stuffed all my posessions inside my badger, I had a retriever and another ship in there as well, uninsured.
Then someone ambushed me and everything was gone.
Don't fly something into nullsec that you can't afford to replace, this is a protip. Also try to look at ships as mere tools instead of priced posessions. This makes dealing with losses a lot easier.

Well, he bought me the ship so I could afford to lose it. And he said he could buy me another ship but I was like: "No, let's... Let's just go play something else...."

RE: Anyone here plays EVE Online?
This reminded me of something a friend of mine linked me the other day. http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-7-bigges...ne-gaming/ Two of the biggest dick moves in gaming history took place on EVE Online
