As long as your chests are hidden and do not have any air blocks surrounding them, you should not have to worry about X-rayers finding them. We do have protection for that kind of stuff.

Because apparently some people don't hide their stuff properly.
Also, if I'm understanding this properly, that would mean that any "hidden" rooms in general would be visible, seeing as there are air blocks in them.

You are allowed to hide your chests. But not just pop a block on them. The difference is quite clear.
