Communism is definetly in middle school curriculum, can't say which year because I don't remember but definitely there. Of course it's up to the teacher what they do and don't teach so yeah... if you didn't learn it you either weren't paying attention or had a crappy teacher. :/

Yeah. Communism and fascism are the two essential ideas to understand in order to grasp the fundamentals of politics, and therefore have to be taught in middle school.
