Locks and lockpicks
I know the discussion has been going on a lot about protected chests ever since the start of Kiwike 2.0. I know thieves would hate it and peaceful players would love it.
Some of you may remember nfmous idea about picking locks but nothing really ever happened on that front. So I've been thinking about locks recenly and I believe I have a pretty good idea for it.

Locks
You can somehow buy/make a lock for a chest. I haven't really been thinking too much about this yet but I'm sure we can come up with something. A lock would be pretty expensive to buy/make.

Locks can then be placed on a chest and the chest will be protected

Protection
A chest with a lock on it will be protected from placing chests next to it, tnt, destroying and opening. Only the owner of a chest can open it.

The chest will be fully protected when the owner is offline. After two weeks of inactivity the chest will go semi-protected. Same thing when the user is online.

A fully protected chest can't be opened or lock-picked in any way. It's just there
When the chest is semi-protected it can be lock-picked.

Picking locks
A thief can lock-pick a semi-protected chest using a golden hoe. To lock-pick a chest you stand next to it and right click it with the hoe. Your hoe's durability bar will go down (up to 100 first if it's been used) slowly. When the durability is at zero the lock-pick will be destroyed and you can open the chest. If you move or disconnect when lock-picking the process will be stopped and the durability will go back to what it was before.

Tell me what you think about all this. Anything you would like to point out and/or change?

The Towny protection would be hard to go around... I guess with some custom codes you can make it so you can't place blocks above chests though. It would be a pretty huge change to take away the full protection in towns, that's for another time imo.

I like the idea, Yotta. If there was something a little more skill-based than time-based, I'd love it instead of just like it. But this is a far better and more roleplay-oriented way of protecting chests.

"One can concentrate so closely on the words of a sentence that one thereby misses the meaning. As can happen in any area of life. You must never lose focus on the larger landscape."

Can you reword this please, I don't understand... If your inactive for two weeks, it becomes Semi-protected. If your active for two weeks, it becomes Semi-protected?

And as for something else. I love this idea, but i'm with Cerce where i would like some how some skill base. Rather than just carrying a bunch of Gold hoes and picking the lock, than have a code or something to solve. Not really any idea on that, but something to work around?

RE: Locks and lockpicks
The skill would be very limited to what you can do in Minecraft server side which isn't too much. I can't come up with anything myself. A big redstone lock would take up way too much space for example. And code locks are just boring as hell.

I was also thinking of maybe having a theif level that rises when you lock pick. A higher level will make the process faster.

And the thing is I hate it when people just leave the server permanently with locked chests around the map. If you try to lock-pick a chest and the owner of the chest hasn't been online in more than two weeks you will be able to do so.

This is a brilliant idea, but hard as hell to realize. I reeeeeeally want this to come to the server if we manage to make something like it, good luck.

Amazing idea. The only thing is... someone with a lot of money could put indestructible chest blocks everywhere with this. Perhaps you can only have a set amount of locks at a time?

RE: Locks and lockpicks
I support this idea.
The only problem i could see with this.
Is that people would have different time lines and thus are never able to picklock the chest of a certain person.
Or that if the person suspects anything he would just log out for a minute or 10 so the thief cannot do anything, and in that time the person being stolen from calls upon people to go ingame for them or something.

It can be abused in ways like that but.
For the rest i like it.
