I think that can be set up. I'll try to find some mineral rich grounds to settle on.

Just a quick addition the the running of the town, we should find somebody willing to make the long trek back for materials we can't find on our own. They could also help restock any shops. Give them enough money to buy what you need so they can get it. Any goers?

I'm sure any spot would do, Digging down and around is bound to find caverns and possibly a few cave neighbors unwilling to give up their homes with the intrusive lights that will get set up throughout the area  Grin My general plan is just to set up a mediocre building in the beginning, set up an underground base that is just under the ground that would have step mines in a couple direction to the bottom of the map. To keep any basements or underground building safe from accidental crossing I would keep low and preferably out of the way of the main town section of course.

If you don't mind, I would like your above the ground house near the town square to build up a bit more but then lead a tunnel to your underground base. Maybe you could help restock the markets as well?

that sounds fine, I usually mine a lot of stone when underground so that will obviously be in high supply. Coal would be supplied when I have a personal stock of 64 for torches (caverns do tend to need a lot of lighting at first). Iron ore would be supplied simple enough, as I tend to use stone pickaxes overall I won't be using Iron for myself much anyways, I would of course need some to make a few pickaxes out of them for the ore that require the higher quality axe.

To keep the mine flowing with ore to the surface a supply of wood would be needed, a stack of 64 logs would last quite a while so smaller amounts would work out at first.

I think I can handle the place within the town center, a building with a ladder into a basement, doors leading to various mines that go deep, as long as nothing is built with a basement right next to the miners tunnel it would work out.

I have this small picture in my head of what I want above ground, I'm sure things can be worked out when the map is up and running and a place is chosen, I think the mine if near the town center should be off to a corner close by, to look out of the way but close to where it is needed.

planning is half the fun.

I've been thinking a lot about ideas on the town walls and defenses in general.  The walls would be built in multiple steps. For instance, start with a design for a basic wall with pretty basic towers. That would be the Tier 1 walls. Then, Tier 2 would add on to that design, etc. I have about four Tiers in my head right now. Each Tier adds on to the last with minimal removing of existing materials, making the whole process very time and material efficient if built properly.

I figured the tiered system would allow us to get walls up quickly and then give us a definite direction and goal for our city defenses. For example, say Tier 1 would need 103 cobble stone for a section of wall twenty-one cubes long and four high (the bottom two rows are double half-steps to make it a bit more interesting visually). The towers are 128 cobble each. So for one section of Tier 1 wall (two towers and a section of wall 21 cubes long), it would take 309 cobble. Or four full stacks and one stack of 53. With a decent area to quarry cobble, that can be gathered by one person in a few minutes with the proper tools. Multiple people gathering it would take no time. Tier 2 would add a bit of height to the towers and a second layer of walls and so on.

I'm building examples of them on my private server and also in Google SketchUp to help flesh out the designs. I don't want to put specifics on here. I'd rather wait for Droidopolis to get it's own forum and post it there. Once we get the private forum for our town, I'll post a huge thread there in much greater detail with screen shots. I also have other ideas for city defenses that I'll put in there too.

Thanks, yottabyte. I actually just got done designing Tiers 1-3 in SketchUp. It seems to be working out pretty well. Each tier upgrade is coming out to take just about as much material to build as the tier before it, for the most part. The great thing is, they look pretty freaking cool. Maybe I'll throw a little teaser picture up after I finish.
