I do believe that the Helvanthar Scouts are the fastest ships, using only 12 wool. Also designed by me

Wait a minute. Is speed measured by the amount of wool, or the number of blocks?

Number of blocks.

Note that everything that has a place in the 3d grid counts as blocks in the code such as torches, levers, signs etc.

Yeah, that's what I thought. How can you fit an entire engine into 12 blocks?

Actually, now that I think about it, I may have miscounted my ship's blocks. It was probably tethered when the ship auto counted.
