2 things here... one, just in case, make sure your sockets fit together.
Two, 16GB of RAM is really cheap (I got 3 sticks of it for 20$ on Newegg), and it's gonna help a LOT with gaming.

RE: Christmas build
My computer is crap (4 INCH WIDE CASE!!!!!!1!!!ONE!) and cannot be upgraded from the point I have it at already (needs new motherboard, cannot fit new motherboard; did I mention that it's 4 inches on the outside? You could probably shave half an inch off that if you're talking about the inside inside)

AM3 is compatible with Phenom CPUs, so don't worry about that Tongue

And yes, RAM is incredibly cheap nowadays. It's like weekend snacks.

RE: Christmas build
I was thinking about it for a bit and figured i may be able to shave the price off a bit if i lowered hardrive capacity some. Is this a good idea?
Oh and another quick question. Does hard drive cache matter? the cheaper one i found will save me about $20 which will allow me to get 16gb ram but it's only got a 32mb cache compared to the others 64mb cache

RE: Christmas build
No, the cache matters. And get a terabyte; you'll likely need it.

RE: Christmas build
One thing, depending on how much your paying for the DVD drive you might want to look around for a used one. You can usually just ask a friend or someone if they have an old computer or look on trash day DUMPSTER DIVING FTW!!! Stoned But, that all depends on how much your paying for it.
