RE: Locks and lockpicks
There are no hard circumstances under which to pick a lock. You stand there and click with a hoe.

As to Riskae's point, I agree. A 4-digit lock combination lock would be perfect. It's still vulnerable, as combinations can be guessed and you can share with trusted players.

They would cost a certain amount, but not so much that you could only have one double chest of valuables only. That's another main problem with having to pay for locks - if it cost too much, you'd only be able to lock a few chests at most. And I really don't know who would want to pay for a lock that lockpicks are readily available for.

Simple program designed to go through the combination of your lock.
Trying about 1000 different combinations a minute, till it finds the right one.

You do not take in consideration the fact it takes time to pick it. it is not right click and the chest opens. it takes time. and you only have a set amount of time after a person logs off. a 4-digit lock is something not rp-wise treu. would be easily pickable using a bruteforce

And i'm not even sure possible codingwise.

Are you saying that it is too easy to hack? Because that is beside the point. It is against the rules, and a limit to the number of tries in a certain amount of time could easily amend this.

How is to easy to hack beside the point?
You started complaining about this whole thing because it was to easy to do?

We've been giving good arguments against it, and so far it's just that the flaws for everybody outweigh the benefits for some. If we're giving lockpicks to thieves then why not give swords and tnt to raiders?

Riskae's combination lock idea would work stupendously too. Or a password lock (which would stop somebody from using a 4-digit codebreaker bot, as there are only so many combinations which can all be entered using bots).

I find that a simple lock/unlock command would do. The player who locks it would be the only one who could unlock it. As an addition, I have seen on MANY servers command based shared-chests that give permission to multiple users to access the chests while still keeping them private.

And Naam, combination locks are possible to code -.- and it's much easier to pick than to break a combination.

RE: Locks and lockpicks
You two clearly miss the fact we are going to be a RP server.

There is no the only person.
We want, to allow something to be able to be stolen.
We do not want people to be able to lock there chest with a simple cobblestone. or like you are suggestion make it impossible for someone to steal.

This system allows safety for the person within reason.
And allows for the person wanting to lock something to be able to do so within reason.

You are being unreasonable, I gave a solution to the hacking thing and here is my suggestion.

I propose we add combination locks.

Features:

They would be 4 digit combination locks
They would be somewhat pricey to make
(Also a limit to the number of attempts in a certain amount of time to prevent hacking.)
Advantages:

It would be more realistic than the current system
It would allow those you trust to access your chests while hindering those you don't
It would still be possible to guess the combination but also still be difficult

In a role play aspect it would make sense because types of combination locks have been present since the ancient Chinese.

I think this is a reasonable suggestion if you have a valid and constructive argument to make feel free otherwise please refrain.

This is an RP server, but if we're compromising our chests why do we even have protection in the first place if griefing is illegal?

Cause we do not wish to see people's hard work go down the drain by a strange group of people who come on and start tearing apart.

But, if someone manages to get into your town. Find your hidden chest stays undetected and is not discovered while the process of lock breaking is in progress i feel he has earned the right to steal your things. If you do not wish things to get stolen you should put the same amount of effort into hiding your things as they have to do finding and stealing your things
