RE: Locks and lockpicks
Regardless of RP reasons many people don't like the lockpick idea for multiple reasons. There are as many reasons against it RP-wise as there are supporting it.
If it should truly be implemented, there should first be an unbiased poll put up on this thread to have the community vote on whether it is wanted or not.

RE: Locks and lockpicks
Crash, yotta has poured tons of time and energy into this. As hard as it is to believe, your perspective does not matter any more than anyone else's. It is going to be implemented, and you're going to have to grin and bear it. End of story. This argument has gone on for long enough. I may not be a forum moderator, but this is ridiculous.

Gecko, calm 'er down there boy. My opinion may not matter more than anybody else's, but it's not just me. It's not like I'm causing shit for fun here - I genuinely want to make this server better.
Besides, if this is implemented I'm just gonna put my chests in a cobble box underground. It really makes no difference.

True, but burying chests under layers of material that can only be destroyed by one person is different than burying chests under ground.

RE: Locks and lockpicks
What if the locking used levels the amount of levels the chest had the stronger it would be, so the thief had to be a higher level than the chest to lockpick it with a golden hoe+ he would loose his levels on lockpicking it.
If the lockpicker had less levels than the chest he would loose all his levels too.
The locker of the chest would losse that many levels he would choose on the chest.
This could be done with a spout gui.
Just my idea

RE: Locks and lockpicks
Stop being so negative about the damn thing.
1. There isn't a 100% chance that the picking will succeed. We're not sure what this rate will be yet.
2. We're not talking 20 minutes after you log off, more like 5-10 minutes. If you are a nomad living far away from civilization, there is no way someone can make it to your house and steal your stuff in that time.
3. Picking a chest takes appx. 40 seconds, giving them very limited time after you log off.
4. If you want something to be incredibly secure, just put like 5 locked chests that are empty in a room. Then hide the actual goodies in a secret room. Say the chance that the picking succeeds is 50%, they might need 9 tries before they have looked in all chests. 9 tries = 9 lock picks = 18 gold bars wasted. 9 tries * 40 seconds = 360 seconds = 6 minutes.

RE: Locks and lockpicks
Okay, now I'm slightly more convinced.
Maybe make the chance of it opening like 50% or like 70% at absolute most.
Also, I did consider that, but how much would a lock cost - and if a lock is picked by one player, is it then openable to all players and needs to be replaced?
