about 2 years or so back i read the hobbit, it was awesome and I was sad to see that the movie production was halted time over time again, now though... now the world will quake in awesome...
Am I the only one that thought his way of writing is retarded?
The only thing I felt when reading Bilbo's book or what's it called was that everything was so predictable. He practically told the reader everything before they even happened.
There was just no mental challenge whatsoever in reading that.
And because of that book, I never read the others.

If it's predictable it's probably because you've read other books that ripped off or tried to imitate Tolkien after he became popular.
Also, how does knowing what will happen make it a bad book? I know how every book I keep in my house ends, but that doesn't stop me from re-reading and enjoying them.

I'm reading the fellowship of the ring currently and I'm amazed by the depth of the book. The movies just scratch on the surface of middle earth.
No kidding; Tolkien spends the first fifteen pages of Book One just giving exposition on Hobbits--geography, history, society, temperament, etc.
When I read a book, I'm looking for it to capture me. It doesn't capture me by telling me that the ring goes there even before the Hobbits even thought of it.
It just makes no sense that I should be made aware of things, long before the characters even do. And that doesn't mean I'm fine with hints. But he practically wrote "-insert object name- -insert object exact description- -insert objects functionality-" all the time.
