Votes are net-positive for the economy. By attracting more players it increases the availability of resources and the frequency of trading and other economic drivers. Additionally it is self-offsetting, since more votes attract more players the total amount of gold remains in a nearly constant ratio to the number of players. Thus GDP per capita is effectively the same. If there wasn't the prize there would be a decline in GDP per capita as a result of voting. The 20gn prize helps prevent economic instability.

RE: Voting fraud
Seriously though, don't vote with others names, even if you're voting with multiple IPs (not that I endorse this)

RE: Voting fraud
Unless you don't want the gold and would prefer not to vote for the server, I don't see any negative effect here.

The server's virtual economy would be at the same 'risk' whether it was you who voted for yourself that day or somebody else who voted for you.

Of course, the morals of cheating in this way are a different story.

RE: Voting fraud
I'm more concerned over the fact that these votes actually have an impact outside the server.

Sure, it's good that we're getting higher up because of it. But do we really want to get there by cheating?

I wish I was an insane space wizard.

RE: Voting fraud
If you haven't already realized, that's exactly how other servers go about it.

RE: Voting fraud
And it's in no way cheating, the Votifier mod and even the iConomy listener for it were written by the owners of Minestatus.
