Different levels of structures' strength?
I'm not sure how the War mod may apply to this, but I was wondering, once (or if) we get out of this Barbarian age, would it be possible to assign different levels of protection to places?
Structures would be assigned a protection level based on mod review for its design.
--Say we have a town with a simple wooden wall, fence, or no defense at all, that probably deserves almost no protection, if any.
--Then you have a place with some honest fortifications like a true stone wall (no single-block things) and maybe a moat of lava or water, something like that. I'm not trying to be comprehensive, just give an idea.
Blocks shouldn't be capable of being placed within several spaces around the settlement and the wall should be extremely difficult to tunnel through (I'm talking like a few minutes to mine through a block of stone with a diamond pickaxe). TnT would still be effective, but only a few blocks at a time, not as destructive as it usually is. So probably 2-3 blocks of TnT to break through w/e the minimum wall requirement is. The ground beneath their town could be tunneled through, but only up to a certain depth. The ground blocks directly beneath their town could only be broken through by the players (and would probably be a bad idea). Direct assaults on the walls would send a message through the town that they're being assaulted once the enemy tries to tunnel or blast the walls. This could be circumvented if the enemy sneaked, but only as long as they were using pickaxes, TnT can't be disguised from being messaged. Leaving sneak would also send messages.
--Third level would be a serious effort, basically your stereotypical castle, big and tall. This would be even harder to tunnel or blast through, but would also require geographical conditions, mainly a stone base to support the entire structure, and it would have to be several blocks deep. Otherwise the same features as level two.
--A possible fourth level where the structure is nearly indestructible. This would be an incredibly difficult thing to both build and destroy, it should require something like several hundred blocks of obsidian (I'm thinking like what Alphonse and Natain had going on in 2.0). Think like 10+ minutes per block with a diamond pick, and TnT couldn't damage it. Would need serious siege weapons to damage it, and these siege weapons would also be very difficult to create.
Just a rough idea I came up with.

But yea, in all seriousness, this is a good idea.

RE: Different levels of structures' strength?
The user client determines how fast the blocks can be destroyed. Unfortunately we can't really do anything to change that. There is a potion effect called Mining Fatigue which works on the client side. Maybe we could do something with that...

RE: Different levels of structures' strength?
Would there be a way to make it so a block has to be destroyed multiple times before it's permanently broken?

This sounds awesome if doable.

Although then you'd need a way for defenders to repair the walls without having to completely destroy them first . . . or maybe they reset on their own.

RE: Different levels of structures' strength?
Or - maybe there is a way that you can set the strength of all the blocks in an area? Like, level 1 protection would be like stone - level 2 would be like iron - level 3 like diamond - and 4 like obsidian, or something along those lines.

RE: Different levels of structures' strength?
I've actually often thought about this :U it allow for siege weapons without grief. And it would make it so that you could attack with the gates closed it just would take longer :3
You wot?

RE: Different levels of structures' strength?
Well to allow for siege weapons without grief, you would need to make it so they can only be built in an active warzone.
