G. Squid, Private Eye
As the sky becomes a subtle shade of cool orange, I notice that the shadows are longer than usual. The streets of Mavenholm are quiet tonight; every step I take is amplified in the evening air. The cobble beneath my boots is moist with condensation from the fog that is now beginning to set in, wrapping itself around every facet of the city like a comforting yet eerie blanket. An anonymous group of characters sullenly mopes out of the local tavern, their eyes constantly darting back and forth, watching every shadow as if it could jump out and grab them. Groans, hisses and the rattling of bones can be heard as the creatures of the night come out to play. Something... Or somebody... Slinks across the road, brushing up against my coat sleeve. When I look for the cause of the disturbance, nothing can be seen. Somewhere uncomfortably close, an eerily human scream echoes into the unanswering night. This land needs something to believe in. Something that lets them sleep soundly at night with the knowledge that they have nothing to fear. Something they can look to in times of despair. A hero, if you will. A guardian.
They need me.
I am G. Squid, Private Eye, and I am here for the safety of Kiwike.

((Well, in the far future I plan on making a town based on detective work, but in the short-term I'll investigate matters of crime for pay.))

RE: G. Squid, Private Eye
They came at midnight, silently dropping through my hole-riddled roof; I blame those damned Endermen. When dawn and my eyes both cracked, almost everything I owned had vanished faster than skin in a molt. I had to leave it all. Take up a quieter life, away from the bustle of the city, the war, and the constant work. So, I slipped on my beige overcoat, light brown leather boots and charcoal hat, slung a pack with some tools and provisions over my shoulder, and slunk off into the sunset. I think I'll set up residence somewhere deep in the wild...
I am G. Squid, Private Eye, and my life is about to get a whole lot sleuthier.

RE: G. Squid, Private Eye
I walked until my legs were rubber and the humidity gathering within the comfort of my overcoat threatened to give me a splitting headache. And then I walked some more. Finally, I came to a spot where the entirety of the sunset could be seen at a quick glance. This was my new home. I sent word to some old friends, and they came to help me build this new settlement. I called it Sunset Alley. It is here that I stand each dusk, watching the sunset, thinking of its metaphorical similarities to the very civility of Kiwike. I am G. Squid, Private Eye, and I have found my place in these forsaken lands.

RE: G. Squid, Private Eye
As I stand on the bare, soon-to-be populated strip of wool called Sunset Alley, I notice that there is something amiss. I thrust open all of the settlement's chests, and my suspicions are affirmed: Sunset Alley's valuables have been swiped. I scan through recent memory and find a promising lead: a previous member of Sunset Alley called Guthrie had just left the town the day before. I face the sunset, don my shades, and climb in a boat. My destination: Canterlot.
G. Squid, Private Eye is on the case.

RE: G. Squid, Private Eye
Once I reach Canterlot, I find that nobody is home. I sit down, lower my hat over my face to shield myself from the afternoon sun (even a reptile has his limits) and settle down for a snooze.
I am awoken by the lowering of a gate and the sound of pistons thumping together. Standing inside the town is a rather strange character; blue eyes, pink hair, a mane, hooves... yet standing upright. It is none other than my old friend Spammuff. I inquire about the whereabouts of a certain Guthrie, only to find that he is not present at the moment. This job never gets any easier.
After a quick conversation and another lengthy nap, I find the very man I'm looking for towering above me. I abruptly adjust my hat and stand as tall as I can to make up for the previous height discrepancy between us.
"Hello, Guthrie", I say with perhaps too much gusto. "We meet again. Care if I take a moment of your time?"
"Not at all", he replied, looking a little impatient. I decide I had better cut to the chase.
"Good. You see, two things have recently come to my attention. Thing one: you left Sunset Alley, which is perfectly fine with me. Thing two: Sunset Alley's valuables are missing."
His eyes widen slightly with recognition.
"Naturally," I continue, "You are the prime suspect for this matter."
"I can explain!" he said hurriedly, a worried look spreading across his face. "I put all of my valuables in a chest beneath Sunset Alley. I'm assuming you dug that up and put its contents with the rest of the town's belongings, so I took them with me when I left to cone here."
Mixed feelings swarm my head. I am relieved that I can still trust Guthrie, as he is a friend, but the realization that the town has next to nothing in the way of valuables hits me with the force of a train.
"I see. Makes sense." I scribble random gibberish into my notebook to give myself the guise of professionalism. "Thank you for your time."
I turn on my heel, give a heavy sigh, thrust my hands in my coat pockets, slide on my shades, lower the brim of my hat, and begin the long walk back to Sunset Alley.

CASE CLOSED

Love,
Gecko
