RE: Ctrl + v
Quote:As she enters Holden’s room, Sunny’s initial actions and mannerisms can clearly be seen as innocent ones and hardly reflect the personage of a prostitute. For example, when Sunny steps into the room, “she [is] very nervous.” Holden notes that this is probably because she was “young as hell.” She was around Holden’s age and the fact that she was young already insists that she’s not the typical prostitute, or that at least we’d hope young people do not make typical prostitutes. Also, when Holden offered her a cigarette, he noted her “tiny little wheeny-whiny voice.” Along with this, she never said thank you as a mature adult would have, and Holden connected this to her “not knowing any better,” as if she was a child. The signs point towards Sunny’s ultimate innocence, which seems utterly ironic seeing as how she’s a prostitute in the hotel room for the purpose of servicing those who pay. Yet another instance in which her innocence is displayed clearly through her actions is when she replies to Holden’s false claim of his age with: “Like fun you are.” Holden notices Sunny’s childlikeness and proceeds to feel awkward and depressed during the interaction with her, not wishing to corrupt her further as he mentions how “peculiar” he felt when she stripped her clothes off, as it should feel whilst he goes against what he wishes to ultimately accomplish. Finally, as if to end our perception of her on an ambiguous enough note, Holden asks her how old she is, even though he realizes she could easily be around the same age as he is, and she replies by telling him that she is “old enough to know better.” Though the last part can be interpreted in a confusing way, the overall impression remains that she is innocent, which leads one to discover that Salinger did continue the development of such a theme as innocence and in this case, Sunny’s innocence. As was explained, Holden ended up ‘ordering’ this prostitute simply to satisfy his needs and had likely intended to go through with it, had he not realized that Sunny was one of the innocent people he wanted to protect. His first idea of prostitutes in general upon Sunny’s entrance is one of corruption and he was simply going to use her for his money’s worth. In the end, Sunny appeals to us as an innocent girl who is nervous when the time comes to follow through with her job. Salinger has Holden notice all of these instances within Sunny to further pull through the idea and theme of innocence that extends throughout the entire novel.

Oh dear.
