Non-rp killing - broader rules clarification and discussion requested
Okay, here's the situation.

I'm sitting in the nether, when I hear someone eating behind me. I turn, it's Pwol. OOC, he knows I'm no fan, but, I've never met him before, so, instead of using my sword (which had knockback, would've been a small thing to send him hurtling down into the lava), I open a dialogue and start to talk.

I let him eat three times while I typed. Yes, I counted, because I expect poor play from him. For my attempt at parlay with this character that mine has never met, I get hit with his sword three times, no dialogue, before I finish my sentence. I swing back a few times at this point, but, I'm half dead and end up dying in some fire as I try to flee.

I talked to the mods about it, and I'm told that, because he was heading to a raid, and he thought I was with the people he was going to raid, that I was fair game.

Wait, whatHuh

I'm in the nether. I'm not in a town. I've never met him. I'm not allied with any of those he is heading to gank. I was literally killed for being in the nether, nothing else.

The way this plays out, anyone who is heading off to a raid can kill -anyone they want-, while those who are about to die are -required- to RP converse prior to taking a swing because they, not heading off to a raid, are unaware that the person facing them is hostile.

My question is simple: Is this going to be the rule moving forward? It grossly favors one side, as you can see.

Add that Pwol also claimed (I was told, anyway) that I was seen fleeing the raid and therefore killed. That simply isn't true. I was in the nether, around...ten squares from a gate, mining, gathering, and planting, when I heard him eating. I didn't flee, I turned to face him, began to speak, and was stabbed repeatedly for trying to follow the rules as I understand them.

What occurred, in my mind, viloates the follow listed server rules:

1.2: Respect Your Fellow Players - lack of respect for a fellow player by presuming everyone between home and site of attack is a valid kill target

3.1: Don’t Seek Unfair Advantages - full on attacking someone who's turned to face you, doesn't have a drawn blade, and is making no motion either towards or away

4: Maintain The Theme of The Server - this is, I believe, an RP server first and foremost. PvP is supposedly conincidental to that.

7: Roleplay - none occurred prior to the kill
7.2: Metagaming - Pwol is very aware that I am an RPer and knows I would engage in dialogue prior to any attack, even when justified.
7.3: Powergaming - Abusing the rules of roleplay to obtain an unjustified kill.

If I am supposed to simply attack him on sight, knowing that he and his are either incapable of or unwilling to follow the RP based rules of the site, I'd like to know. If the rules moving forward are to be as stated above, I think those of us here for things other that farming RPers for PvP kills with thinly veiled excuses would like to know so we can consider whether or not this is the right site for us. Thanks.

edit add: moving forward, have I now met him, IC? Should I expect him to be hostile moving forward, in spite of the lack of justification of the kill? It's a slippery slope and lets people make a so-called mistake to continue to justify doing what they wish to do anyways, please keep in mind.

Thank you for listing all the rule violations. In my personal opinion, the server can go to ways: PvP or RP. It seems to me that the staff wants it RP, but a small amount of the 2.0 players want PvP. Most of the old 2.0ers don't care which way, but ALL of the new players want RP because that is what the server is being advertised as.

The staff agrees, and we have already consulted each other to find that we're definitely looking to have things more Rp oriented.

There's no need to tighten RP more because of this, you simply need to deal with Pwol about this occurrence.

YES!

Someone finally gets it!

This is the /proper/ way to get things done, guys. I applaud you, FinnBalto.
