Radios (it's probably not what you think)
I was wondering what everyone thought of my idea.
Basically, I'd RP inventing hand-held radios. I'd then release the "design" to the general public so that each enclave of civilization could build one to keep in touch over long distances. This would facilitate trade, national interaction, etc. That would necessitate a new chat channel (if I remember correctly HeroChat (the plugin currently used) supports multiple channels being added) for "long distance" roleplaying. Additionally, a city/town/nation could purchase (from the server like buying a Kiwike Ship) an encryption key that would allow for private long-range communications. An encryption key would just be a private channel. I'm going to assume that private channels will be expensive in GN to prevent flooding the system with useless private channels and I suggest that only the leaders of a city/town/nation or what have you be allowed to purchase a private channel to, again, prevent flooding.
Just wondering what everyone thought of the idea.
Thanks for reading,

Sorry, this would not only change everything, but it doesn't fit within the theme. Still, it's a great idea, but it's just too high-tech.

Isn't there supposed to be technological progression as the Ages progress? I fail to see how it would change everything, to be honest. The lack of long-range in-game communications kinda screws with things anyway.

We have quite a good letter system.

Not to mention the server is based in a steampunk era, so radios are most likely out of the question.

RE: Radios (it's probably not what you think)
The letter system is pretty limited, to be honest. You need 1 postbox for yourself and 1 per location to send letters. Not to mention letters are slow, reach 1 person, and are a mess to write.
Wait, wait. Steampunk? Steampunk makes radios out of the question? You're serious? We can't have a radio but we can have airships that run on the magical power of absolutely nothing?
Think of the various things that can be considered steampunk. Think of the base DEFINITION of steampunk. Steampunk is re-imagining existing technology if it was constructed in the era where steam power was the main source of energy.
I could RP that I found a way to make diamonds resonate with a piston hammer striking it a certain number of times per second and building a receiver out of another diamond. Does that make some semblance of sense? Yes. Is it happening in the game-world? Absolutely not.
How do the Kiwiships fly?
There's no source of energy, save using coal in a booster engine which is not needed to fly.
Is the wool enchanted to be lighter than air with a buoyancy several orders of magnitude stronger than helium to the point where it lifts the whole mess of a ship off the ground?
How do the ships maneuver with no rudder, propulsion system, or wings?
How does redstone going into a SIGN cause the ship to ascend or descend?
Furthermore, how do powered rails work?
Those are built in to the game engine. There's no propulsion system on the minecarts that could take power from the rails and use it to move. Maybe that is a planned feature, but how does it work now? We just accept that it does work and go about our lives.
Don't even try to say that the era we're saying the server is in affects anything. We supposedly started with zero technology despite the game having pistons, noteblocks, jukeboxes, and records.

Good idea but it's just i licence to metagame.
Even though metagaming is unstoppable with forums and the internet, it just makes it all the more impossible to crack down on.

You mean with people already getting on and demanding their friends get on Skype? I agree, it could be abused, but it's not like it already isn't impossible to crack down on.

Even if there are ways to abuse this sytem outside of our reach. Its by no means a reason for us to allow someone to 'invent' a system to make this legal.
So no, even tho the idea is fun we're not going to do this

Whoa. Chill. To that, I say this:
Steam-powered radios? Are you out of your mind? We take realism where we can get it, and we can get it here. Radios don't work without radio waves, and sound can't be translated into radio waves and propagated across a long distance without electricity, which we really don't have. Also, I haven't heard of radios being used in a Steampunk setting at all, and we're a Medieval Steampunk server, so it's just out of the question. Finally, you don't need electricity to make an airship. Use your imagination for the rest of how they work. You can't seriously expect yotta to make a plugin with all of the mechanics of a ship making perfect sense. There's just no way. Your argument is made even more invalid by the fact that the radios would be invisible anyways, which is markedly worse than what Kiwiships can do.
Logic'd.
Love,
Gecko
