1.3 added Ender Chests into the game, global storage with an inventory linked to each player.
A lot of people believe these chests are too over powered for a survival server.
So I came up with an idea.
Ender Chests would function like a machine to access the global bank. Each player have their own bank account to store stuff in. When you are online, only you can access your account, from any chest around the world. Just like how the chests work currently.
Now, if you are offline a thief would be able to "hack" into the bank system from their Ender Chest. Probably using a lockpick (diamond hoe?) and they can access a random bank account from any offline player on the server.
That's pretty much my idea, short and simple.
This lets you use the Ender chests like an extended backpack while you are online, when you log off most people would empty their bank account so their stuff isn't stolen.
Here how about we make it so then there are banks where you buy a vault and you can store that chest and you can access it in different towns. and thief everyone in awhile will come in and just hack in like yotta said, but i dont like the idea of it only being able to hack it when the person if offline... the reason why is that it would be really unlikely for you bank not to get hacked because raiders eventually after the what 5th try will get in and there are plenty of people who will just do that. So maybe we should add in a different thieving idea then that one
I do like the idea of theiving, but using a pick ASWELL as when the person is offline is just too easy. Perhaps if when you say 'hacking' into another persons account, it actually means it... Add passcodes maybe, but put limitations on it. Maybe a passcode has to be 5 characters long and can only include 4, 7, 1, 9, or 3.

Brute forcing locks would be terribly boring. I doubt anyone would do it unless they wrote a script for it.
I get where you're coming from though, it discourages everyone from actually leaving stuff in the chest when they're offline. So there's really no point with the whole stealing thing.
I like idies idea other than someone just doing the codes one by one. perhaps the codes could change every once and a while. and have no set numbers just 5 numbers 0-9

My idea is that Ender Chests only work like in vanilla minecraft for sponsors, and the chests in the protected rooms at the inn become Ender Chests. Other than that, (for people without protected rooms at the inn) the chests work like how Yotta suggested.
Just....No..... offline hacking is a bit irksome to deal with, since there is no honest way to retaliate, and in all honesty when a person logs out OOC, their char in a sense is still there....doing their thing IC .... Offline hacking really does smack our IC/OOC divide in the face.... as it basically says, "Your char cannot think or do anything while your not directly controlling them"
Overpowered for a survival?
pls yotta.... you brought me on to make this an RP server, any one can run a survival server, You wanted an RP, its is harder <3
Besides I really dislike the idea of being able to hack into such, You can't double stack enderchests. so in the end you merely have but one single chest to store items.
Think of it like this, right now only sponsors have any safe way to store goods, Why not leave the chest as they are? non-sponsors then have a way to safely work up to a secure method of storing good. While I would MUCH Advocate donating to the server, the chests don't seem to pose too much of an issue.
Now the lock picking, yes I say they would be able to abit with a much longer time needed to break in.... I mean in all honesty it is harder to craft an enderchest, and even harder still to move it. Thus the lockpick time would need to be increased accordingly. Perhaps if the lock picking time was increased? Im not sure how data is stored for the enderchest, but if someone picked a lock, in what way would the server know the right players inventory to call up. A Global hack is a surefire way to damnation in my opinion
