The Universe Project
If it works, it will be phenomenal.

Yotta and some other of the devs can go over the technical aspects provided, though, it looks quite legit.

And, yes.
I gave you my referral link. If that angers you, I'm sorry.

RE: The Universe Project
From the video it seems a little too ambitious, especially considering the fact that they want the initial world to be the same size as Earth. Unless they're expecting a few billion people to be playing in their world 24/7, there is a high chance that massive areas will remain almost desolate.

It's one of the few games (or ideas I suppose), where I'd recommend going out into the actual world and doing stuff rather than in this virtual reality.

Agreed with droid. They don't actually go into the technical bits at all. Players develop their own skills and inventions? Who draws the models and records the animations? Or is the game a perfect simulation of real life physics down to the atomic level. Boy, that would be fun. But it isn't.

The idea is awesome but it's simply not possible.

RE: The Universe Project
I like the idea. It's really interesting and would be fun, but by no means unique and as Droid said would take a lot of people. And I hate to be one of "those" people, but the graphical quality as it stands is way too low for something that should by all rights look as good as it possibly can. If it ever went, say, 3d and had something resembling the graphical quality of at least Planetside 2 it would be a bit more interesting and intuitive.

And yotta brought up a valid point of the models for everything. It's far too ambitious for its own good and could easily boil down into a game resembling Hearth and Home except less popular.

RE: The Universe Project
Read the FAQ; there's a ton of stuff about how the servers will work, a couple more details about the systems, etc.

I admit, I'm not sure if they weren't being specific in some areas because they weren't knowledgeable about it, but the reason they listed was that they didn't want anyone snatching up the ideas or figuring out how to reverse engineer them for hacks.

Unfortunately, you have to enter an email to get to the faq (Scroll down after) but here's a video (The quality is iffy):

Here's the dev blog with an old, un-updated faq:
http://universeprojects.blogspot.ca/

Also, within those articles, I read that one chooses how close to civilization they'd like to spawn, terrain will be generated under Earth-based guidelines (Kinda like Minecraft), and the 2D will be replaced by 3D models and characters if the game's successful after an extremely long time.

Since the game's also targeting the mobile platform, it could easily obtain dominance over the horrible pocket MMOs.

Tsk Tsk Droid, too conservative. Here is what I say to the No-Sayers: Ambition is what fuels the world! The impossible is never impossible!

1% OF THE POPULATION CONTROL 99% OF THE FORCE

Except when it's not possible.

It's more like I'm apart of the minority that understands what appeals they're using to to make the game... appealing. I also understand how this thing couldn't possibly work as well as the concept video proposes.

I'll believe it when I see it.

RE: The Universe Project
After watching the video, my suspicions are growing. It's quite simply not possible to create what these people are promising; they think they're groundbreaking thinkers coming up with this idea and putting it out there, but in reality they're just one of the thousands, millions even that have already thought of it, but the first ones to be foolish enough to actually believe it. They don't seem to understand the amount of work something like this would need, and the engines it would require, and they don't seem to even realize how general game development works, that they can't simply run a game, especially a game of this magnitude, on one engine forever and expect it to work like they want. Games and the things that run them need to be upgraded all of the effing time, and the time periods they mention in the FAQ greatly outlive the lifetime of any useful game engine out there.
