He is right. Minecraft uses OpenGL, pretty much all graphical applications made in Java does.
And removing stuff from your HDD makes it faster, but SMP doesn't need the HDD for anything else than loading the files, which it does when it starts the program, so the only thing you're going to gain from it is maybe a couple of milliseconds faster startup.
