That is not treu.
Lockpicking was easy untill as recent 1900 when they used more advanced ways like tumbler lock.

Back then it was as easy as inserting wax into sayed lock harden it pull it out. and make a copy of the key.

The Chinese used complex puzzle locks which essentially are the equivalent to a modern combination lock.

I cannot seem to find those complex puzzle locks on the interwebs
Only wooden 2 pinned locks, and later during the medieval period the tradiontal ways to hide a lock in placed to make it harder for a thief. But as-far as my brains go's it was easy up untill the 1900's

RE: Locks and lockpicks
This system would NOT be realistic, and the gains would be only to thieves. How realistic is it that impenetrable buildings should have chests inside them that can be broken into? Not really at all.

The lock system only benefits nomads, and even then they can be picked. In the end money is just wasted by everybody involved.

If I live under protection, who's to say that I can't keep my chests in a 3-block thick cobble room underground?
That's as realistic as any vault in the medieval era, it's only inconvenient.

If we around allowed to cover our chests with blocks directly, we're gonna surround them anyway. That itself is a ridiculous, counter-productive rule.

I am.
I am just explaining to them that as-far as i know.
There is no magical lock explaining why the lock picking in kiwike should take 'countless' hours.
Cause in realistic ways back then they were also easy to pick.

Very ontopic if you ask me

RE: Locks and lockpicks
I propose we add combination locks.

Features:
  • They would be 4 digit combination locks
  • They would be somewhat pricey to make
Advantages:
  • It would be more realistic than the current system
  • It would allow those you trust to access your chests while hindering those you don't
  • It would still be possible to guess the combination but also still be difficult

In a role play aspect it would make sense because types of combination locks have been present since the ancient Chinese.

Again. how would it not be? What impenetrable building back in the medieval/steampunk area was impentrable?
You are right that gain is to the thieves, and why shoudend they be? They do deserve an upgrade from totally impossible because of a single block over the chest. and that upgrade is to a lock that can be picked under hard cirumstances
