We just want there to be at least a few good looting items from each stronghold raid. Nothing in excess, but not too little, either.

Considering the stronghold instances are free, I don't think the loot should be so ridiculously valuable.

the prep? really? unless you're going in by yourself you don't need anything more than armour, weapons, torches, and food - none of which take any substantial length of time to acquire if you have a decent set-up.

Yeah sounds a lot like mining. Food tools torches. The loot in strongholds is not currently ridiculously valuable, all of that could be gotten just as easily and quickly by mining. It just needs to be randomly generated so it's not all in the same place every time.
